I dont think a background will do that much damage.
I have a T-Brid 850 with 256. Dont really see anydifference with or without a background.

But active desktop does cost you a lot of mem.

Streamline. All about performance. Is there a need for picture? No. So I cut it out..... Reduces the weight of my desktop.
