That depends on perspective.

Getting a doctorate, or I'll just say PhD, can be good or a waste of time.

A PhD is one of the best things you can do if you want to get into higher level academia such as College or University teaching. Of course with that comes research, there isn't a professor in the coutry who doesn't do research. If you want a job in the private sector doing research, a PhD is a good idea.

If you just want a normal job where you're not doing research like product development, sales, marketing, burger flipping, a mechanic, etc. a PhD won't help you at all.

Remember, a PhD DOES NOT MEAN THAT THE PERSON KNOWS MORE!!!!! I cannot emphasize that enough. A professor with a PhD doesn't necessarily know any more than one with only a Masters.

So what does a PhD mean?

It means you're able to do buttloads of research on a very specific idea and write a very long fancy dissertation about it. That's all it means, really......it shows that you can do research.
