Yeah...it is mathematical. I'm not entirely sure how it works, but if you look at the chart at the end all of the symbols repeat themselves which greatly reduces any error. I've messed with things like that before and it's gotten it wrong, but a lot of the time the most common numbers people pick will share the same symbol. So I'm sure it's part math and part knowing what people will pick. I also noticed that the characters above the numbers seem to be randomly (or maybe not so randomly) switched every time you do it. That's gotta have something to do with it.

Like steve said there are only 12 symbols (one per month) so they have a 11 out of 12 chance of getting it wrong
and the fact that you can only choose 3 numbers that again reduces the chances of them getting it wrong 2 out of 3.

I was doing it and it got it wrong a few times.

it's all based on probability.

um... no you shouldnt be able to get it wrong unless you messed up your addition or subtraction. its because when you pick any number your going to end up with the same result, a multiple of 9. for example.

11 = 11-2=9
12 = 12-3=9
13 = 13-4=9
14 = 14-5=9
15 = 15-6=9

21 = 21-3=18
24 = 24-5=18
27 = 27-9=18

32 = 32-5=27
37 = 37-10=27

40 = 40-4=36
43 = 43-7=36
48= 48-12=36

50's 60's 70's 80's and 90's all work the same

90 = 90-9=81
99 = 99-18=81

then they just keep the same symbol for all multiplues of 9, but have it all mixed up
