Radar Detectors
Hey i was wondering how many of you use radar detectors and what types you have. I need to get one because the cops around here have been rediculous, and i speed without even realizing it (seriously). Also how much did you pay for it, special features and whatnot. Actually we could make a good sticky out of this.

from what I've heard one of the better ones is a Beltronics and any models Vector 945 and up but thats roughly around $150. my boss said his works awesome, gets a warning a good mile+ from a cop, he said it saved his ass numerous times.
actually thought abotu buying one but I'm now officialy out of spendable cash |

just found a neat site, radarbusters.com the site is run by a retired cop who tests the newest radar models. The escort 8500 did amazing but i don't have that kind of cash, but they have some other stuff there that's pretty nice.

I'm telling you man...yes the 8500 is a little pricey @ $300.00 but it has gotten me out of about 1,000 + tickets (I speed alot). The best it has done on the highway was picked up a cop approx. 3.5 miles ahead of me.......

Here's the thing with Radar detectors...they're only reliable if they're expensive. That Escort is simply insane...in how well it works and in price. The Valentine units are great too. You just to make sure you get one that can jam radars too since the "instant on" guns are so hard to detect unless you're in traffic...which would hopefully mean you aren't speeding anyway. I remember seeing a unit that was wired in through front and rear liscence plate frames on a car that could jam a radar gun from like a mile away. I'm kicking myself for not remembering the name. That's what I'd get if I were gonna use anything.

I have a Beltronics I got from work...I think it's a Vector 985. It retailed $300 but I got cost on it which at the time was like $210 or something.

Beltronics is the way to go..I believe beltronics makes some of the speed radars that the HP uses. On the other hand, Escort Solo and the passport 8500 are the shittznitz...They have a new model out the 8500 x2 or something like that...Think about it...Speeding tickets in florida go $175 and then $5-$10 for every mile over the speed limit...If you take your average speed...when speeding, calculate it, then compare the ticket price to how much the beat radar cost... youl will se why they are so pricey...The other alternative is never stop...If they try to pull you over just keep driving to where you need to go, get out of the car and go inside...Who knows? they might think your crazy and let you go.

well that's the thing i don't speed a lot i mean usually 70-75 on the highway, and i really don't need a detector that will tell me 3.5 miles in advance unless i'm doing like 120 and covering 2 miles a minute. SO my friend and i went up to best buy and found a realy nice cobra, i think it's the 9400, it was actually on sale for 100, from like 120ish. Says a friend of his has it and liked it. So i bought it and i hard wired it in, so when i turn the car on it comes on auto, neato.

Ill tell you guys a story about my detector.
I was heading back from indy from a pool tourny down there. On the way back I was driving about 70-75 on 31N. It starts beeping like a mother as I topped a hill. And i saw a cop pass me on the other side 31S. Then i watched another unmarked car pull a u turn and proceed to fly up to pul me over. The cop makes me sit in HIS car ( thought I was getting arrested) And his words to me were cop:"Whats wrong you radar detector didnt pick me up" me:"Yea, I saw another cop pass me and i thought that was his signal" cop: "I'll show you something" (Thought he was gonna shoot me) He pulls down his radar and said "Who made you detector" me:" Cobra" I said meekly feeling sick ![]() cop:" Well what a coincidence! They made my radar. I dont think that they made your detecotr better than my radar" needless to say i got a ticket An i learned that you have to buy a high priced name for good reliable "protection"

Ive had an 8500 for about 2 years, and have not got a speeding ticket nor have i been pulled over for speeding. The 8500 gives more than enough warning. I just recently installed the smart cord and it looks clean. You can't even see my dector and I installed the mute button in my dash. |

^ That honestly wouldn't suprise me...but that review looks like it's over 10 years old. The article I saw couldn't have been more than a year ago. A jammer that worked would be invaluable...but a good ole fashion detector that works would also be nice. Too bad I haven't got the money for either.

Yea, that isn't the jammer you spoke about. Those are just a couple jammers that they tested. There is also a dector that they tested that is installed in the lincens plates lik eyou mention, and i remeber them saying its not that great and there is no way to tell if its on and working.
