I want to get a street bike.. BAD

Although i don't think i can do it this summer. Anyway, i was thinking a CBR, i'm not sure how much money i'll have to spend tho. Also, i'm wondering about all the extra costs (helmet) and whatever else i'll have to buy

Okay.. Have you ever ridden before? Do you have any experience on any type of dirtbike, or something similar? What type of driver are you?

Riding is a big responsiblity, not to mention its dangerous. If you have no experience do yourself a favor and start small and cheap. Dont go out and buy a +600cc SS bike because they are cool. We are talking about your life here. Dont let pride get in the way of that.

Look into getting something along the lines of a used Kawasaki 250R or 500R. They are sporty, fast enough to get you in trouble and are still a blast to ride.

Starting smaller WILL make you a better rider. Throttle response isnt near as touchy, and the power is a lot easier to keep under control.

The other suggestion I have for you is to take the MSF course. Its a great course that teaches you everything you need to know about surviving out there on the streets. I would suggest you take the course before ever buying a bike. They provide the bikes, the helmets, everything you need. You just have to show up.

Okay, now that Ive gone through the sales pitch let me answer your question.


A motorcycle:
Like I said buy something cheap, and light. The more fairings the bike has the more it cost if you drop it (you will drop it sooner or later.) You can usually pickup bikes like a GS500 and 500Rs around 2000-3000 (depending on how old, miles, etc.) The GS500 is a "naked" bike which means it has no fairings. You dont have to worry about smashed up plastics. The 500R has half fairings, and the 250R has full fairings. A brand new 250R will run you about $3500 + TTL maybe cheaper if you do some negotiating and looking around. I would almost suggest something cheap and used though. Ride it for a year or two and move up to something a little bigger. You wont loose much money if any on resale of a used bike.

Insurance:
Insurance can be very, very expensive! This is another reason why you should start out cheap, and small. Naked bikes usually tend to be alittle cheaper on insurance since there is less to break. Fairings are very expensive to fix, cosmetic damage can total a full faired bike.

A Snell and DOT approved helmet:
These can run you anywhere from $100-700 or so. Mine was only about $130. I know a bunch of websites that you can get them fairly cheap. Just make sure you get one that fits.

Your riding permit:
Dont leave home with out it, or a motorcycle license that is.

Any extra riding gear:
The more riding gear you have the better protected youll be in an accident. You can never be to safe. Good sturdy boots, and a good riding jacket with armor will help alot. Not to mention give you a little better piece of mind while riding. Prices vary depending on brand, style, etc. The jackets range from $100-700 or so.

MSF riding course:
I dont know how much it costs where you live, it varies from state to state. In Ohio its $25 for a three day course. Ive heard some states charge as much as $300+. But its worth every penny.

I started out on an old 76'ish Yamaha 125 bike. I road that bike all over the flordia swamp lands. In sand, in dirt, took some jumps, learned how to burn out and do doughnuts. I've also ridden an 1100, and a 750. WAY TO MUCH POWER. The CBR600 I have now has a jet kit and is agile as I'd wish it to be.

I'd start out with a 250 and the MSF course... Ride that for atleast 6 months... even get some rain and gravel/sand/dirt riding in. That'l give you a good feel for things. Once that's done, then you should be able to step up to a 600... But beware, 600's have a lot more juice. I've almost lost the bike several times because of how quick it takes off.

my friend got a 2003 CBR black with a yellow and silver sticker kit, its an 8,000 dollar bike, he put 3,500 down, and only has a 98 dollar a month payment (not including insurance). I took it for a ride......damn.

And you dont have to do all the stuff everyone else is saying. Pay for a course in how to ride, they teach you, the only problem you'll have is finding neutral. Because first gear you press down, and 2nd and up you press up, and neutral is between the two. And this is was told to us from someone who owns one. Trust me it just takes some getting used to.

Bwahaha... Dude have you ever ridden before? Theres a lot more to riding then finding gears. Braking the wrong way could put you on the ground. Cornering thats a whole book of tricks. Emergancies, what do you do in certain situations. There is a lot more to riding then just hopping on the bike and going. Some people cant ride with good formal training, they just dont have the ability to.

Do you need insurance? I feel bad for you if you didnt.

Do you need a helmet? In Ohio, you are required by law to wear one your first year of riding. You should ask yourself do you value life, if you have to ask this question.

Do you need a license\permit? Well again, I feel bad for you if you dont, and get caught.

Do you need riding gear? No, not really. Its just an extra saftely precaution. Id rather be safe then sorry. But thats just me.

I've already been in an accident. If I had my riding gear on I would have gotten on with nothing but a sore neck. Instead I lost two patches of skin the size of my fist, my sholder and around my love handles, and lost part of my ankle. Gear is esential in my opinion.

You don't have to take the corse, or get a training bike. But remeber, this is your life. Falling from 35mph i flew about 20 ft up hill and had a 6" crack in my helmet, wish i had my gear that day.

You're going to get it, there is nothing you can do about it. Even if you're the bes driver there is, some dumb f*ck is going to merge without looking, or make a u turn without looking, or something. You're just need to be ready as possible for it.

Actually, I've been trying to decide between getting a bike or a Jeep to 4x with lately and am leaning more towards the Jeep for that very reason.

I can't think about getting a bike......i have bad enough luck with all my cars. My dad has an old Harley Sportster....gotta be like a '72. It's all customed done and has a big stroker kit on it. I fear for his life everytime I see'em jump on it. I'll never ride that SOB...i always have a feeling that that'll be the way my dad will pass.

Like the quote he mentioned "...those who have fallen, and those who will." Riding a motorcycle is alot more dangerous then driving a car.

I would have to agree with everything that RacingRice said. Get a medium sized dirt bike (150-250cc) and ride some trails. You'll learn how to ride, build up stregnth (in the wrists, ankles, etc.), and teach you what it's like to fall. You can even get an Enduro or similar (street legal dirt bike) and get some experience on the road.

Now, I ride dirt, and not street (not yet, no cash flow). But I would recommend a helmet, good boots, and a leather jacket at least. If you plan on riding for any distance often, full-leathers and gloves are the way to go.

all i can say is this......i love bikes but i also have a huge respect for them. at teh age of 16 i witnessed a guy take a simple turn hit some road debri gravel and he slowly laid teh bike down, he ended up hitting his head so hard he died on teh scene! now mind you he was turning at a max of 25mph? he was in no way speeding. he did nothing wrong! he had a helmet on he had a jackety on and jeans. when i got to him he had an open compound leg fracture from the bike falling on him, and his helemet looked perfect. had he not died on teh scene he would have had to undergo months of grueling physical therapy to restore leg use. is teh thrill of teh ride really worth all this? he gave up watching his kids grow up becasue he wanted to feel teh open road. think twice!

The way I look at it is, we all will die sooner or later. Why live life in fear, when its your time its your time. Should all of those people not have worked that died on 9/11? IMO, when you die, is pretty much out of your hands. Lightening strikes, crazy people, debri in the road. Its not really something you can control. He probably drove down that road many times without any problems.

Im not the kinda person that goes out and jumps out of 300 story buildings for fun, but I also dont believe in living a life fearing death.

Hmm, the way you phrase that I'm not sure which is which.

harley = brand name
crotch rocket = style of motorcycle

So, say you'd ride a harley but never an import cruiser, or say you'd ride a cruiser but never a sportbike, and it would make more sense.

It's really easy to buy a 600 race-replica bike and drive it really fast. You can do wheelies and stoppies, impress all the girls at your high school, and when riders like me see you we'll shake our heads at why our insurance is so high and why the non-riding public hates motorcycles so much.

I'm in RR's camp - I took the course, learned on a small bike, bought what I could afford full insurance on, ride with 80% gear 100% of the time, and save my unsafe riding for the track.

Thats cool... Its always important to look around when shopping. If you can get used stuff then do! Just make sure its in decent shape.

Its ashame the MSF courses in some states cost so much. If they would lower the prices maybe it would encourage more people to take them. Like Mushroom said, its only $25 in Ohio.. If you pass you get your motorcycle endorsement. You cant lose. But even if you have to pay $200 for the MSF, I would strongly encourage it!

Lost a side mirror today. Lane sharing down the freeway and as i was passing like an altima or something, the car move a couple inches towards the cetner and i caught my right side mirror on their mirror, glass blew out and now i need a new one....

Besides the fact that I was lane sharing... not my fault, and lane sharing is legal in this state. Just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
