TMPGenc is a good one for manipulating MPGs. If you want something nicer, Premier 6 will work. You can get a trial of TMP for free though (not that you couldn't "find" Premier)

I found that windows movie maker isn't THAT bad... it's fine for chopping off a chunk but re-compiling the video takes FOREVER unless you have a FAST machine.
I did an hour long special just edited out the commercials and it took about 3hrs on a 300mhz and about 45min on a amd 1800. Oh and loading the vid. take a LONG time too... cuz it breaks it up into clips so it's "easier" to edit...

is it an mp2? sometimes they're mpeg layer 2's and only certain video cards recognize them as a video file... my ati records in them (I record shows on my comp) and then won't play them in that format... pretty smart huh?
I'm not sure what to do in this case... all the shows I recorded in mp2 are lost... I'm sure there is a way to play them but I haven't really looked into it that much.

Well, you can still work it, but it might be a little more work. I'm not at home right now, so I can't give you the list of programs I'm using off the top of my head.
pdiggs, try to take the mpg file you have, and under the file menu in TMPGenc (you should actually get the plus version, I forgot), there is an option that says "MPEG tools" or something like that. You might be able to do simple manipulations from there. Other programs are DVD2avi that could probably read it. Check www.vcdhelp.com for more help.
