Model questions, EX, LX, etc.???
Well I just spent the last few minutes searching through 22 pages and still am a little clueless. I'm lookin to get a Honda sometime in the next couple of months so trying to get some knowledge before I hit the streets.
Anyways, what I want to know is which model to be looking for. All the creature comforts would be nice but not 100% necessary. Basically I'm looking for the fastest model I can get for a max of $10k. Years between 92-00 with the newer more appealing. I came across one thread that helped some but want more clarrification. Its looking like the EX and Si models are what I'm looking for. Which models within the specified years have the DOHC VTEC motor? I'm not interested in the Hatchbacks so that can be eliminated. One other question, what is the average MPG of DOHC VTECs? Thanks for all the help. |

i guess you are talking about civics, so i say ex is your best bet. it comes w/ a 1.6l sohc vtec, ac, p/s... you will probably not be able to find a 99-00 si for under 10k, those have the 1.6l dohc vtec.
the del sol vtec models have a 1.6l vtec too, and the si models have the 1.6l sohc. |

No offense, but if you have to ask this, then maybe you should reconsider your engine choices. If you're looking for the ultimate in speed you're gonna have to sacrifice mileage. But, if you're a normal American who doesn't have the luxury of burning gas like there's no tomorrow, then maybe you should consider the SOHC instead of the DOHC. If you've got 10K to play with, then my suggestion is to look into a 93-95 LX coupe. You should be able to find a nice one for around 3K. That leaves you plenty of cash to upgrade what's important. It's got most of the creature comforts as the EX (ps, ac, pw) minus the sunroof, d16z6, and EX/Si tranny. Now, with the extra cash you have left over you need to go buy a used d16z6/tranny/ecu. Everyone's dumping these in favor of the almighty b-series, so you should be able to find one pretty cheap. Then you do all the normal bolt stuff and get a better cam and ecu reprogram. When all is said and done you should still have plenty of cash left in your pocket and a relatively quick, comfortable ride that'll still be gettin around 28 mpg.

No offense taken. I asked the question cause I simply didn't know what they got. Besides I currently drive a Jeep for off-road purposes only so I think that a Honda with the best engine will get a lot better gas mileage than I have ever gotten. The best mileage I've got in my years of driving has been like 23 on the highway. I've had a Toyota truck with the 22r, a 74 Bronco with a hopped up 302, a 97 Mustang GT, and now my Jeep with a 4.0L I6. So the MPG question was out of curiosity not concern. Now right now you are speaking giberish to me as I haven't learned all the engine codes thus far. Let me say this, I don't wanna buy a car to later swap the engine. I do enough swapping in my Jeep to quench my thirst and frankly don't have time for it. I'm sure its easy and what not but between school and work I don't have much time for anything. I wasn't necessarily talkin about Civcs although from what I've seen I tend to favor them in the 2 door model more than the Accord. I've been looking in the local Auto Trader and Ludes around here aren't too cheap. Now that I know what model Civic to look for, EX, what about Accords. What model would be what I'm looking for. Sorry I'm new to all this but bear with me, I'm a fast learner. Thanks for all the help so far. |

you might wanna look into an 88-91 CRX if you are gonna keep the jeep and want something that can run and just drop a new motor into it. Since you can get them for probly 1k

I do plan on keeping the Jeep. But like I said I don't wanna have to do any motor swapping. I just don't have the time to mess with it. I work full time and go to college full time so its hard to find time for much of anything.
I got swaps I gotta do on the Jeep right now but don't have the time to do it so they are sittin in the shop collecting dust. I thank everyone for their responses, it has helped me more than the 22 page search I did a couple of days ago. So what I'm looking at is a 92-00 Civic EX 2dr with a stick. I'm just more attracted to the Civic than the Accord. If I can find a lude within my pricerange I might get it but from the looks of it they are outta my range. Hopefully in the next few months I'll be able to get one, but till then I got time to learn all them dang engine IDs, what is it a 95 Civic EX has the DY18 something or nother. I work at Advance Auto Parts so I was lookin at some stuff today just to see maintenance cost. Anything I should be weary about. Should I go stick or auto? I've had one auto in my life so far. Sticks are just a lot more fun. |

Well stick will out last you, but the honda autos run for a long time too.
If you're goign to be gettting a small 1.6L engine you might aswell get all the power out of it as you can and go for the stick,ya get better milage too. If you're looking for great milage might aswell just stay with the civic's and forget the ludes or accords. Bigger motor means more gas and right now I'm getting about 12mpg on my Acura 3.5RL. Then again I'm driving like theres no tomorrow all the timte. |
