I dont think its the hours he's complaining about, but the lack of man power it takes to get things done right, and to keep customers happy. Usually if customers arent happy they will look elsewhere for the supplies. This isnt good for the business at all. I say if your boss has a problem with it, he needs to work on business skills a little better, before he's out of one.
