psi boost??

When people say like 9 or 10 psi boost..what does that mean?

a psi boost reffers to how much pressure you are allowing the turbo to squeeze the air into the cylinder on the intake stroke.

If you put in a turbo, the stock boost on it is 5.5 psi, meaning you can run on stock internals, nothing much done in the engine. If you go above, you will need better spark plugs, an upgraded fuel management system (not exactly standalone, but increase the amount of fuel that goes into the engine), and get better pistons.
Meaning if the person is running 9psi, he has more than just a turbo done to his engine.

Anyone wanna correct me if I am wrong.

You're not wrong, but the amount of boost you'll be able to run on a stock engine depends on the engine that the turbo is on.

is not the boost the addition pressure??? meaning if you put a 5.5psi turbo on your car, you added an additional 5.5 psi's to the internals for a total of a different sum, (5.5 + whatever stock psi is )

Agreed, but I meant the general stock boost is 5.5 psi on the engine. And 4jacks, I believe you're right! _

I would like to correct on this part. I ran 10psi on my stock engine for 6months. Not until I pushed the boost up to 15 (had to win the race) did I blow my engine. Im sure it would have blown eventually but compression was looking good for all 6 months of 10psi. How much boost a stock engine can take is up to that ENGINE. Not car but engine. I ran 10psi on my eclipse for 6months but I have friends that blew their engine running 7-8psi. No matter what any dealer will tell you, EVERY ENGINE IS DIFFERENT. Some are just built better than others. Some are just faster than others and produce more hp. In a magazine I have, they dyno'd a stock Skyline GT-R V-SPEC (EBCNR33). 244.1hp to the rear wheels (stock). Using a 15% driveline loss estimate, they calculated 287hp at the flywheel. Whats this?? 287hp?? Nissan says that engine produces 280hp. Im sure someone owns that exact car with same engine and it produces only a mere 276hp at the flywheel. From all my babbling I hope you learned something. Im trying to say that just because one Honda b16a blows at 6psi doesnt mean yours will. Just pay attention if your gonna boost higher than what the manufacturer recommends. Compression test before installation, compression after a week at whatever boost level. If all looks good leave the boost and do another compression test a week later. If results still look good, do a compression test in 3-4 weeks. If at any time your compression lowered, just drop the boost a bit. I hope this made sense, im damn drunk.

well, yes, I didn't correctly phraise what I wanted to say. What I meant is that the usual boost that people squeeze if they want to be safe is 5.5, and that's the boost that the turbo runs without a controller. Right?

5.5psi is not what people run to be safe. Its what the manufacturer of the turbo kit has it set at. Greddy is very cautious, if they put a kit out at 7-10psi and it blew everyones engine, theyd be screwed. They are playing it safe, im almost positive a honda engine can handle 7psi of boost.

Ok, I have a question for you know. Say I get myself like an MX- or an Altima, with like ~70-80k miles (or 110-130 km). Is it safe putting a turbo on a car like that, and do turbo's come for these kinds of cars or do I need a custom. And how much will both scenarios cost me, if say I want to upgrade the engine a little, liek the fuel injection, and get better spark plugs and ignition.

dont be too paranoid ... f-max.com they run 9psi on stock everything except they give u injectors which is needed to run more boost than others u need to buy pistons if u have a honda u dont need crank an rods untill greater hp. dont listen to the manufacturer i hate them have a nice day race hard

one more thing about a given engine handling boost... it depends where in the rev range the boost comes in... if you try to throw 10psi on any stock import car motor at 2000 rpm, it will sh!t itself out the oilpan. lots of factors involved, but up in the 5,6,7,8k range, the internals of the engine are moving in a way that is much more conducive to higher cylinder pressures. no bent rods or holes in pistons... whee!
