Help! Connecting win98 with xp to do file transfer
Hey guys, I have a computer I need to transfer all of my stuff onto. The host is running 98se and the new computer is running xp home. I have succesfully connected them with a parallel cable (all I have right now)...
How do I actually transfer any files? I've done it for 95-98 before and it was easy, but I'm having real problems here. I've enabled file sharing on the 98 machine and under network neighborhood on the 98 machine, I only see the c drive, which I'm sharing. On the xp my network places, I can't find anything. Thanks for any help you guys can give me... ![]()

wow... once you get it working thats going to take weeks.
parallel cable = slower than dirt. you are trying to go 98>XP or XP>98? that smiley is getting the rounds today. lol. |

id say if it where me i'd get some cd-rs and burn the files... its literally going to take 10+hours to transfer your HD to the other computer.
with cdrs much less time. and you get a hard copy of it to boot. |

I was going to leave it running overnight, but I guess I'll just use CD-Rs. I'm not sure I want to yank the drive out of my only working computer right now... but it might come to that.
BTW, I'm transferring from 98-->xp Thanks for the quick help

np... it does get tricky going from 98 to xp.
i think you will be much happier with the cdr route. |

Doesn't laplink require a special USB cable?

i just did a quick search for parallel transfer rates... best i saw was 1.2k per second. which would take 277 hours to transfer 1.2gb if my math is correct. 2 cdr's maybe 15 minutes 1.3 gb.

The connection rate says that it connected at 4Mbps... I'll just transfer my vital files on CD for now and worry about MP3s and stuff later. Looks like 15 gigs of mp3s would take a little while to transfer...

lol... 15gb of your mp3's would take 144.7 days to transfer on parallel cables running at 1.2k/s

In my opinion win2k is far superior. And not having big brother breath down your neck is also a plus. I'm waiting for the second edition, look at Microslacks history:
Win310-->stripped down Win311-->better with more options Win95a-->sucked Win95c-->better Win98-->better than 95, yet buggy Win98SE-->far superior than anything previous WinME-->doesn't count, only uneducated people bought into that scam Win2k-->awesome, becuase built on previous NT tech Winxp-->garbage so far, wait for next version |

it's an WIN2K with a candy wrap interface. it's a lot faster than win2k and resolves some of the compatibility issues that i had in 2k.

win2k... good. xp better, but not the be-all and end-all of operating systems.
and if i had my choice of any windows versions... i'd run either windows xp or 98se. the most compatible versions of windows to date. |

NTFS file system... multi processor support (just 2 actually, MS likes to make it sound big ya know) those are the biggies. everything else is more admin tools.

Well i actually went thru something similar a couple days ago. My sister had windows millenium and I wanted to upgrade her to xp. In order for her computer to show up on the network I had to run an update for millenium. Apparently there was some network update that fixed the problem of her computer not showing up on the network. After that I transfered all her stuff that she wanted saved to my computer and then I reformatted to xp and then re-transfered all her crap.
