Does anyone know how I could change my IP address?
My cable ISP assigns static IPs. Thanks, JP

Mr. Rice, you sure do know your cars and comps. I would have to agree. If you have the same address everytime you get on, you probably have a static IP. You can only change it if you call your provider. I have AT&T cable and I used to have a static, but they recently switched over to DHCP, which I think is a better choice for security sakes. Looks like you will just have to play the famous phone hold game waiting for a customer service idiot that knows nothing but where the power switch is. Good luck.

even dynamic ips can be the same for many months... they dont hafta change the ip, but they can if they wish... now static you only get one and it never changes without divine intervention. you can try calling them but dont be surprised when they tell you to hush and use what you have. cable people are famous for that.
most cable nowadays is dynamic and most dsl is static but yours may be different. |

Well, technically, the isp does not change the ip address, it is assigned automatically when the request is processed. I hear ya about getting the same one all the time though. With dhcp, you will only really change ip addresses frequently if you always shut down when done surfin.

ok, its dynamic..
But its been the same ip for 3+ months.. Damn it, I'll have to call.. I tried the release/renew, doenst give me a different IP.. Comes back with the same.

Do you always leave your comp on? You should try and shut it down for a while and hope that when you come back up, you will get a new on if DHCP is enabled on your comp. By the way, why do you want to change your ip?

Accord Man... You have a router dont you... That is what will have you public address from the ISP. If you anything like me you never shut it off. Which mean that will keep the same address in a DHCP enviroment. Your router will then assign you a Private DHCP address because it is doing NAT. But like I said before chances are your router wont grab a new DHCP address because itll just keep renewing with the same one. Chances are your ISP will just tell you that its DHCP and your probably SOL unless you can get it to grab a new address. I doubt they will assign you a static address..
 If you dont mind... Why is this such a big deal?

Nobody is wanting to kick my ass.. The thing is that, on Direct-Connect, I tried to connect to a certain hub.. But since I didnt meet the minimum requirements, he just banned my ass. Without any warnings.. That mofo..  But like I said, its no big deal. Thanks again.

and also my ip is static. All I have is a cable modem hooking up to comp. Even if I reboot modem or computer I still have the same ip! |
