Why do people insist on mispelling common words?

I say pop. A lot of the northern states say pop. Here's my theory on why us northern folk say pop: If you look at the northern accent, we tend to hold onto our long vowels longer. If we were to say soda we would sound pretty ridiculous since other people would be saying "soda" and people like me would be saying "soooda". So to me its a dignity thing. We don't want to sound dumb so we just adopted another word for those delicious carbonated beverages.
