Advancing your timing does give you a bit more power. I wouldn't go farther than +2 degrees to 18 degrees timing for normal street use. You will however be required to use stictly premium (high octane) fuel to avoid pinging otherwise you may do damage to the motor as exhibited by your friend in a worst case scenario situation.
