- Buy a used bike without lots of expensive plastic to start. You will drop it. If you've never ridden, you'll be blown away by a 20 yr old Honda NT650 with 40 bhp. You don't need 100 hp to start.
- Figure out how much you want to spend on the bike, then deduct $1000 and get a good helmet, jacket, gloves, boots
- Deduct another $100 (or whatever it costs in your state) and take the MSF course. Definitely worth it.

Insurance isn't that bad - just shop around. Some ins companies rate based on engine size, some on style (sportbike, cruiser, standard), and different ins companies have different blacklists. I pay ~$350/yr. for full coverage on a $4000 bike, <25 single male.
