when i bought my civic it has those nasty black trim pieces around the fenders as well. i just peeled them off, and gave her a good washing. there was a little color difference in the paint due to sun fade. but hardly noticeable. i guess it did not matter anyway i rear ended someone a month later with it. But i still have it. :
