OK, i know what's so great about a h22a etc, but what is so great about a b16a? I know people always swap them into civic hatchbacks and crap but what are the specs on this lil engine? And are the tough? I have also heard h22a aren't that tough, is this true?

they are cheap and put out 160hp, which is really nice for the price you pay...

if you look around you can get a full swap easy for 2k and installation is very simple, plug and play almost...

to go from 107-160hp for 2k, thats big bang for buck...

good price for a very decent motor
lots of them out there to meet the demand
been making them for many years-w/ many generations of the a's
very good top end
good flowing head (itr has a b16 head...granted its improved a bit)
direct bolt in for 92-00 civics (some simple wiring changes...some models more than others)

The fact that it makes 25hp more, weighs 100lbs less then my engine, and it has VTECHE! Because we all know how wonderous V-TECH is....

For real though, for small cars (like hatches and CRX's) it's a very durable and streetable solution.

plus they make tons of aftermarket racing parts such as stroker kits to bring iut up to a 1.7ltr

well... theres a huge aftermarket... easy bolt in for civics, not hard to come by, wont throw off your weight ratio like a h22 would in a civic, they arnt as cheap as h22s... unless prices have dropped considerably since ive checked last(for the best b16's... not the early 90's ones) but if your building a civic for what it can be good at (good handling and fast into and around corners) then that engine meets your needs when built up right

If I were going to swap there's no way I'd get one of those...

I'd get a b18a/b before I got the b16... it's utterly torqueless which is my biggest gripe with my d... you could make a dseries MUCH faster than a swaped b16 with the same money spent... and it would be less work... you'd be closer to pushing the limits of the block and maybe sacraficing some reliability... but given the option I wouldn't put a b16 in my car for just about anything...

having said that... they are very reliable and relatively stout... Many people run stock internals with decent amounts of boost...

Once built they can make incredible power... but still with the no torque... even with a stroker kit they won't have the same powerband as a b18a or b... I'd definately prefer a b18 over a b16...

H22 I feel is too heavy (not much more heavy than a bseries) and WAY too much torque... All I here about is NO traction in anything but ideal conditions... and even then you can burn rubber hitting vtec easy... I'm all for power and all but if it's unusable power it's pointless... and I also don't like the permanance of a h22 swap... if anything goes wrong with your block you have NO option other than swapping in another h series... you can't go back to b or d without rewelding a tranny mount ear on... (it needs to be cut and a new hole drilled in order to mount the h22)

I read up on this motor a lot a while back when I was trying to figure out the best motor for my swap. It's actually a decent little motor, and you can't beat the price. You can have that swapped into your car for about 2 grand, whereas my motor cost 3.5 grand without the swap. That was the motor that I was going to get, and then I stumbled upon a little extra money which allowed me to get the better motor, B18C. If the B16 was the motor in my budget I would definately get it. It's a good motor and is easy to beef up the internals if you're planning on boosting. If you're not gonna boost, it's still a great motor for the average joe. Lots of aftermarket parts available for it and is cheap and easy to drop into civics.
