It's piecing a system together yourself other than buying a kit. It's a bit more time consuming and you'll need to read up to figure out what the best combo for your car/performance needs, but it's far and away a better choice than a kit. I put my kit together and it was cheaper than mail-order kits and from what I've heard from people with similar setups not making as much power. You can hit up your local speed shop (whoever you had planned to do the install) and ask them what they would do if they were in your situation.
