how to tell if yours is vtec or not
I have a civic si and i have had it since 2002. I did not know how to be sure mine had vtec or not and i didn't want to lose a street race because it wasn't turning on right so i found a way to test for vtec.
yopu look on the side of your car for a vtec sticker first. if there is not one do not even test because it probably does not have vtec. ok you start your car and start driving. when the needle on the rpms gets to something like 7 it will change sounds. that sound is vtec making more power, dont be scared. if you hear it you have vtec. |
This maybe a stupid question but is the difference between the SI Vtec and Vtec that the SI is DOHC?
|
yeah that works I suppose...only it wouldnt have to be that high rpm for around...oh all honda's w/ vtec. Most of them kick it on anywhere from 4500-5800.
An easier way to tell is to just look for the vtec solenoid. An even easier way is to just look on many of their valve covers...though not all that have it will say. Another way is to ask the dealer that you bought it from. Vtec will probably not help you win a street race...Id be surprised it it did. Vtec is highly overrated... Anyways, street racing is illegal and you should not be doing it at all. As to the other question: The SI is just a car that has vtec...nothing special about it. The 99- (6th and 7th generations) model si's are all dohc vtec motors. All that means is they are Dual OverHead Cam motors that have vtec. Not all dohc motors are vtec and in the same respect, not all vtec motors are dohc. The 5th generation and below civic si were SOHC (single overhead cam) vtec. |
vtec could help you win a race because when it comes on you get a big horsepower boost.
does your car have vtec? when you get into high rpms you feel kind of a kick into your seat and the engine gets going way loud |
No, you dont get a big power boost...you get a moderate spike in power...nothing "big". In fact, not all vtec motors are desinged to use vtec as a power adder. The HX vtec, vtec-e, is a way to increase fuel efficiency, and in the sohc (d15b,d16z6/y8) motors vtec is very minimal power spike AND small fuel compensator.
Yes, my car does have vtec. D16y8 sohc Do you know what vtec is? |
vtec is the valves speeding up when you start to have to shift to make more power and pull you ahead and only honda has it.
my vtec has a big power boost. maybe your car is just different |
no, thats not what vtec is
Why dont you go find out what it really means? Knowledge is power... Like I said, sohc motors do both fuel and power, not as large as dohc. HOWEVER, it does not mean that its a BIG boost....it may be a few hp, but nothing more...especially on stock valvetrain..... |

At least you spelled Vtec properly. . . . welcome to HST. |
start doing research thats all I am going to say. U have a long way to go as far as understanding things.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA! and only honda has it....what about toyota and nissan??? Even ford has it, (though it does little for power output). Porsche has a version of it, also. Quote:
are you serious? I don't even have words for this one...... Not that I think you'll even bother with improving your ignorance, but here is a decent site with which to start looking for what variable valve timing is: http://www.mr2sc.com/websites/articles/vvt.htm another good one is: here and here and here |
(dont you love how he tells us what it is and how to look for it, even though he doesnt have a clue?);)
|
wow i must say pdiggitydogg, you are right on.
For all of you other mechanical boneheads out there, vtec is when a hydraulic actuator switches to a different cam lobe on a camshaft, hence vtec ( i think its variable timing and electronic lift control0 or something like that. That is why if you look at a regular camshaft, and a regular camshaft, you will see extra lobes on the vtec camshaft. I have a 2000 ex with a vtec, and it doesn't have the stickers on the outside or on the valve cover although it is a vtec. My only question is where is the vtec actuator? i'm curious to know where and how this stuff works. As to v-tec being overrated, i think not, it is a wonderful techonlogy, but it is not outstanding since many manufacturers have replicated it. It is however noticible because my buddy has a non vtec civic with a d15 and when he drove mine he said it was amazing compared to his. However i don't think it provided a substantial power gain when it comes on as some people were saying. |

oh yes, it provides many minutes of insane laughter for me. I'm surprised he hasn't said anything ban-worthy yet. My theory is that he is some kid that said "I'll go on to an import forum and act really stupid, for my own twisted entertainment". this is almost sad. |
The reason the d15 has less power is because its a smaller motor.
Less Displacement Smaller stroke Less compression Less agressive cams Not to mention the y8 has a much more sporty gearing in the tranny. |

ask and u shall recieve. Info for newbies. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/question229.htm |
I think it stands for Variable valve Timing Electric lift Control?
Other than that, just wow. |
ya i think it goes somethin like that...
|
think ya scared him off guys, lol...rightfully so tho
|
wait by him do you mean me because i was not scared off lol i was out of town for a few days but do not worry i am back

Speaking of which, what about that character named OPAKRACING . . . whatever happened to him . . . . oh wait ;) |
i used to have a 96 dx (d16y7) non vtec and i now have a 00 ex (d16y8) vtec and i honestly think that my dx had more power at higher speeds than i do now in the ex i don't really have power until the vtec engages but once it does it's nothing so spectacular that it's going to give u such a power boost im going to beat any car i race just cause of vtec. vtec was probably primarily made for road racing where ur in higher rpms and have the extra power to run u through the gears faster where as if u have non vtec it would be more for drag racing where u have power all the time instead of just in the higher rpm range ne way thats what i think about it
|
all i can say is wow... im gonna print this thread out and tape it onto my car... +10 hp right there yo!

Well, you may be right, but you are missing out on DOHC VTEC . . . . . the way it was meant to be |
You know.....There were two things not addressed here. Number one, the 2002 Civic SI (which you have) the VTEC kicks in at 2200 rpms, so you don't have a "big boost" around 7,000 rpms.
And just because it doesn't say VTEC doesn't mean it lacks VTEC. *edit* nevermid, didn't relize he was banned. it took long enough:) |
he was banned 3times
|
dude, this is the first time I've seen this post....... I must say... this is one of the funniest shit I've ever heard and read on any Honda board.... the best part is, it is not even meant to be a joke!....BUWHAAAA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

that'll probably be a username he'll use to re-register! funny stuff...I wondered how long it would take.
|
man...some people...funny though...I learned a lot from you other guys in this thread! I never knew that much about VTEC mechanics until I came here. Thanks for the enlightening ^^
|
its what we do here...inform
|
^we try to. until someone stupid post something and confuses the others who know nothing-little about it.

I was hoping someone would catch this.... Quote:
Your right dingo because thats where the rev limiter is! |
lol^ ha mine redlines at 7.2rpm.
|
hmm actually if he's running a 2002 si (with a k20 i think) his revvy should be around 8k right? Although most civics are around 7k.
|
Quote:
No you have that backwards. The si lets the needle park @7k. The older EX's have a fuel cut at around 8200-8500 i beleive. |
actually the older ones are at 7200
|

OMFG!!!! Im sorry I have to bag on this idiot. Hey!!!! Go learn some stuff before u give advice!!!!!! U DONT KNOW WHAT U ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!!! Quote:
exactly. |
he was banned. and i thought this thread was left to RIP.
