Ok this probably sounds really dumb to a lot of you people, but I am clueless...no...uninformed about the topic at hand.

Alright, if a turbo is spooled by the exhast gasses that are given off (we all know the turbo manifold)...how do the exhaust gasses leave the car? I'm a little confused about this because...I just am. If the gasses go to the turbo...:crazy: ...catback exhast...:crazy: ....what good is an exhaust setup? Why do OE turbo cars have exhaust pipes...no there has to be a reason?

As you can see I have no idea and help would be great because I recently posted a Q about superchargers (what i wanted) but now I would rather do turbo (because I can get a sweet deal through a friend and dont want to pass it up). Problem is...I just bought a Tanabe Catback and I dont want it to go to waste if I am right about what I am thinking...

The turbo has a mount on the down side ofit, when it's mounted, and yes the DOWN PIPE hooks up right there and does it's deed. a bigger down pipe will increase flow and help a bit too.

just like the top picture indicates, there are 2 sides of the turbo assembly:
1. the turbine side
2. the compressor side

both rides on the same shaft but each have its own separated casing. as the exhaust gas leaves the exhaust port, the expanding gas will initiate a "wind mill" effect to the turbine side. since the turbine is directly shafted with the compressor, the compressor will also spin therefore compressing air. this compressed air is directed to the intake manifold for combustion purposes.

on the other side of the assembly-the turbine side, after the "wind mill" effect occurs, the expanding gases will be directed to the downpipe.

internal wastegate and external wastegate operate on the same function but not necessarily located on the same section of the assembly. for the most part, external wastegates are mounted on the exhaust manifold. internal wastegates are incorporated within the outlet port of the turbine section.
