View Full Version : Crappy Idle?

Well last week I installed some MSD 8.5mm wires, and about a week or 2 before that i did a venom 400. For the last few weeks ive noticed my idle is really rough... like really rough..

i thought it was the venom at first but i turned it off and it still did it.. so i thought maybe it wasnt getting enough spark so i put the MSD wires in...

then i noticed that my 4th cylinder MSD wire kept coming off the plug, and it was taking a crap.. so i fixed that, well im still stuck with a rough idle... and now i noticed my tranny feels like its slipping, but i dont think it is since they told me at the trans. shop that it was fine. But like if im at a light and im going up hill.. my tranny will slip and slip and slip until i get on a flat surface, then it will downshift and go but with lack of power..

I put some fuel injector cleaner in, and filled up today cause one of the guys at a local racing shop said it might be dirty injectors, but what does it sound like to you guys?

if this doesnt make sense to you, slap me :P

Thanks in advance
jason;(

How rough? Like almost going to die rough, or just real low RPMs? Does it fluctuate a lot? check all your connections, check your spark plugs.

Your other problems, I have no idea, but it sounds expensive.

it sounds to me that the wires are bad. put back on the 6.5 mm wires until you get a new coil and ignition. And might as well check the dist cap and rotor.

It seems like its almost going to die rough...

I dont have a tach but its fluctuating quite a bit..

Im dropping it off at a mechanic tonight since im going out of town for 4 days, i figure it couldnt hurt..

Same here. I tried messing with mine earlier today, but it's hopeless, and I'm way in over my head. to the mechanic it goes!

Update us on what the mechanic says. I'm having the same problems with my '92. What is your idle speed? I usually idle around 1500 and i KNOW that cant be right...

what ? 1500rpms ? your idle is quite screwed up. it should be half of that with the iacv connceted and 500 with it disconected

what would be causing it?

mine idles at 1500 initally, then goes down to 700-800 after warming up.

that is fine. every cold engine does that.

you will know it because the engine seems like stalling and shaking like a mofo.

Well it shakes a little bit, but nothing violent. I usually idle around 1500, but sometimes it'll get pretty low too, around maybe 300-400 and when i push the brake pedal the rpm's go way down, and it feels like im gonna kill it.

sounds to me more like a vacuum problem. you have power brakes right ?

have the vacuum hoses checked out, the throttle body cleaned up, and a fuel filter change. also add some fuel filter cleaner to your next fill up
