engine?

I have a 96 civic ex. Thinking about engine trans swap. What do u all recomend. I want something thats better than what i have now but i cant afford like 4000 dollars for it, nor do i need something that expensive. Something for a couple thousand would be ideal. Any recomendations?

the only thing you could do for less than 4k would be an H22A /tranny swap which runs in the neighborhood of 2500.
which would give you around 200 hp and a manual shifter. a good start. beware the H22A's do weigh more than your current motor so the car's balance won't be the same so you might think about some suspension upgrades to counter the extra weight.

Keep in mind you'll lose all your belt driven accessories- a/c power steering, abs- all of them will be gone.

Also try to find a JDM one if you can- they have higher compression ratios.

actually they can all be kept but it involves more money and some ingenuity.
and you can find the engine for $2500. but are you isntalling it yourself? cuz if not its going to cost you another $1000 to have it installed.
is your suspension ready to handle the extra weight and power? if not look to spend more money there - at least $800.

still find that swap to be cheapest? oh and axle breakage is another problem you'll encounter im sure more than once.
my friend with an H22A civic EX broke his custom made axles already.
so you want to spend $2k for an engine and transmission swap eh? save your pennies until you can spend about $3k-$4k w/o worrying about it - you'll be happier in the long run imo.

Thnx hybrid thats good to know all that stuff now instead of me finding it all out later. Whats everyones opinion on just the tranny swap. In reality i dont need the engine swap but the manaul tranny would be nice. Im just worried about the risk.
What does everyone think?
Also any around St louis know some good places where it could be done?

its going to cost nearly as much to do the tranny swap as it would to do both engine and tranny.

i say wait til you do both and save yourself some bucks.

To be honest with you...unless your not daily driving...take a b18c1 (gsr) motor..you won't run into as many problems with it and it drops right in. I would also REALLY consider what hybrid said. about the axles, suspension...etc...because unless you want a headache...don't do h22.

b20 that civic. i have a friend who is running a crvtec motor in his 97 hatch. this setup is great for all-motor. my friends setup includes fully built b20 bottom using eagle rods, wiesco pistons, skunk2 intake mani, crower valve springs and retainers, JG cams, skunk2 cam gears, erick's throttle body, gsr head ported by skunk2

*uck that! H22 all the way. It'd be silly fast. Who cares about a/c and P/S.. i mean hell, its not like your trying to steer 35" tires. Wee baby tires. They make cvs tha'l withstand the h22. and the weight? thats what coilovers are for, anyone biulding a import, thinking about a swap would more than likely have some sort of adjustible coil set up already on there. Who wants to biuld a fast as car that cant handle. You all act like these are all extra cost taht wouldnt apply with a b18c.

the h22 and it's weight is a small factor. it does sit lower in civics which can bottom out. coilovers will help but once they settle in, you will need to adjust and adjust.
