Sound cuts out of stereo

I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the 12v/security system forum. If it needs to be moved, move it.

A few weeks ago someone broke into my car (again) and tried to steal my stereo.. only they didn't. When I put the face back on everything would turn on and the unit would beep but no sound would come out of the speakers. I brought it to my sound guy and he checked all the wire connections and said everything was fine. While he was with me I turned to unit on and it worked. On my way home I lost the sound again. I left the unit off overnight went back and it worked fine. Now about 3 weeks later the sound cut out on me again.

Does anyone have any clue why this is happening or what I can do to fix it?

Oh and BTW today when the sound cut out, this HORRIBLE smell filled the car and even outside around it.. sorta like an electrical burn and rubber burning. Which I never had before.

humm, i'd like to give you an answer, but you dont have much info..

Did you notice any physical damage anywhere?

I doubt its a power short or anything like that.. My guess would be that the concerened component was messed up.. your HU perhaps?

No physical damage.. the inexperienced theives (obviously) tried yanking the unit out and in doing so they pulled the "holding pins" inward so it kinda locked the unit from coming completely out. I started the car today.. didn't work, went driving around, went over a bump, the sound came on.. downshifted, sound went off again.

Someone please help me this is driving me NUTS!!!

sounds to me like the power wire perhaps is losing its connection on occasion and sparks when it touches again and probably melts a bit of whatever rubber is on it wherever its messed up at.
or perhaps the ground wire. there has to be a way to get the HU out, id do that if i were you, by all means.

no my speakers were not touched.. when they locked the clips in, the unit could not be pushed in or pulled out at all. So I took it to my sound guy (who I bought it from and installed it) and he checked it all and said everything was ok.

I think the unit itself is ok.. maybe I need a new wire harness. If I start the car and the sound is not coming out.. anything that will make the car shake (hit a bump, close the door or trunk hard) will trigger the sound to come back on. If the music is working downshifting usually messes it up.

Well, being that they were theives they probably just tried to strong arm it....that means that they would've pulled on it as hard as they could...probably messing with all the wiring in the back. I'd say take your whole unit out and inspect the connectors. Make sure they are not bent or fried. Then check the harness to. Make sure every wire is nice and secure. If just one of them is loose, that could account for your occasional burning smell and loss of signal.

If they didnt go for anything else besides the deck, then dont worry about the speaker connection, battery to amp line, etc. Its all in your center console. Get a flashlight and look for burn marks on plastic and rubber (in your car.)

Be very observant. Its always the slightest thing.

I had the same problem

I had the exact same problem in my car when i first installed my deck. And if you know anything about stereos, you will know that these "sound guys" don't usually know that much more than you do. They just check stuff over quickly. I've leraned through lots of experience and agony that some installs/checkups are better done by the owner of the vehicle. ANyways, that was just my 2 cents worth. With my car the deck would cut out, come back in, cut out and come back in with bumps or with a little bit of acceleration. It turned out to just be the power connection. you might even want to check your positive connection from your stereo battery on your battery terminal (if that's where it goes to) because it may be hitting some corrosion or yucky crap and causes it to blank out. So just check EVERY connection like grounds, - and + connections and all taht. Don't skip ANY wires and i'm sure you'll get it all figured out.

To get you guys updated.. I did my mom a favor and went food shopping. As I loaded the groceries into my car I noticed that my rear speakers were not even. Looking more closely I realized one of the speakers with touching this metal harness-type thing that holds it. So rather than me f--- it up more I brought it to this new sound guy I met and he said it was shorting out my speakers. YAY! Problem solved.. it had nothing to do with my stereo. When those basterds put my speakers in they messed up and I felt the results a couple months later.

THANKS FOR EVERYONES HELP!!
