tire sizes

can somebody explain to me what the number on the tires mean ?

let's say for example i have 185/70/R14
i know 185 is the width of the tire 185mm
what is the 70 there ? the height of the tire or the raport of the width and height

I know R14 is the diameter of the rim.

sorry for the reatrded question but i need to clarify this once and for all

The 70 refers the the height of the sidewall, ie. aspect ratio. It is a percentage of the width. (200mm width, 50 series = 100mm sidewall)

The R before 14 means radial btw.

The breakdown of a tire size (185/70/14 for instance) is as follows:

The first number (185) is the width in mm (185 mm).

The second number (70) is the aspect ratio. Take the 185 and multiply it by 70% to get the sidewall height. (185X.70=129.5mm or approximately 5.1 inches)

The third number as you have already stated is the rim diameter (14 inches).

no i just argued with a guy last night about this. he said that 70 actually is the tire height, and i said it was the aspect ratio (i refferd to it as a raport)
