short shifter

does anyone know of a pretty good short shifter. they all look fairly similar but some are $45 and some even get to 150. i'd appreciate any feedback. thanks

i have a B&M i love it... it was like $70 although ive never personaly seen it happen, i have heard of people snaping off the cheap ones shifting too hard... i give the same advice that id give for any part... buy from a reputable company

a cheap shifter will have play in it and not shift very well... my friend had an obx, and he trashed it because he had trouble getting it in gear

i got B&M too...love it I know someone that got APCrap and it broke within a week. He got a free replacement and it broke the first day so let that be a warning to all those who even THINK about getting APCrap

Well my little brother has a Ebay Shortshifter on his civic. I bought it for him for christmas and installed t for him. We havent had any problems with it and It goes into gears very well. The quality seems to be just fine. PLus it was only 20 bucks. I would buy another shortshifter like that agian.

yes, dont buy the APC short shifter.


i bought an APC one 2yrs ago and have had no problems....just get the neuspeed bushings and you are good to go, no sloppy shifts. but dont listen to me, just listen to the people that have never actually installed and used an apc shifter

approximately how much is it for B&M shifter? i'm quite tempted to buy those $14 Ebay shifters....i mean c'mon $14 is cheap...

ok...sure call me a liar...I just know the kid and saw both snapped shifters myself...i just dont want him to take the risk of getting screwed...you took the risk....it worked for you...im happy for you

I just recently broke my cheapy, that i paid $45 for. I am having tranny problems and when i tried to shift during a race it didn't go into gear and it snapped right where the knob screws on. So i rethreaded it, only to break it 2 weeks later when i was mad at not being able to use reverse...

Either way now ill never buy a cheapie again...and i will probly go b&m. I have seen some b&ms go for $45 on ebay

I have the b&m and I wouldn't recomend it unless you have short legs and long arms... it's not bent like the stock shifter so it sits too far forward.

I'd definatly go with the cheapest one you can find. It doesn't take more than 10-20 Ft/Lbs to engage a gear so if your breaking shifters then your just pulling/pushing too hard. a shifer could be made of wood and not break under normal opperation.. it's when kids think that slamming gears somehow makes them move faster.

Go cheap. My 2 bits.

well, i wasn't slamming anything. and when he breaks his shifter, it may not be right away but it will eventualy happen. he will see what we were talking about.

But thanks for the heads up on the b&m i was gonna get one and i was wondering why it didn't have the bend

installation of a short shifter isn't that difficult correct? i'm planning to get a short shifter along with some aftermarket bushings..but where can i get the bushings for a cheap price?

JC whitney has prothane shift bushing for $9.97 they work pretty good and the price is right I've order at least 5 sets of shift bushings from them. I buy and sell Hondas all the time and I like to do some work to them before I sell em. Being able to experiment with cars like I have the best combo I've found is to use a DC sports short shifter for an Acura Integra in a civic believe me it fits just make sure you get the bushings for your car and not an Integ. The shifts are short as can be and for those of you who don't like bends in your shifter this one has one small bend in it barely noticeble. It also places the shifter in a nuce spot also.

I have a C's short shifter in my car....it is one of the best kinds you can get. They cost a llittle more, about $190 with a good deal, but they're worth it.

I would not get a random brand (ebay, etc) or something cheaper than 40 bucks or so. Any short shifter is going to be hard on your tranny and bushings faster, but getting a good quality will easily save you money in the future. I've broken two and learned my lesson.

i ordered the B&M shiftter (thx pdiggitydogg and slow) I haven't installed it yet, but i am going to tonight. I just got my car back with the new clutch so we will find out...The shifter came with all kinds of bushing and good instructions and some lube. The shifter itself you can tell is well made and nice and sturdy. I got it from summit and paid i think 65 shipped, ill let you know how it goes after i install it.

hope you bend the heat sheild near it...if not its gonna bug the hell outta you when your slowin down and still in gear (5th seemed the most active vibrating gear to me)

I got the OBX shifter with the Type R style threaded knob and neuspeed bushings.. I like my shifter, havent had any problems with it, but I dont shift like a mad man either.

Get the bushings! Youll be sorry if you dont.

sorry, i never though about pics....but i did get it installed and it is nice. I move a total of 1 ince and a 1/4 from first to second and 1 ince from 3rd to 4th. I kinda like the no bend. The Bushing feel nice. The only problem i had is my old generic short throw was smaller than stock so when i tightened the bold to it, i bent the fork in. So when i installed this one i had to bend the fork out.

sohc_vtec 2NR It really is easy, you only need two sockets and an extension with the wrench and a box wrench. The hardest part is working the extension up there to get the bolt off. If you do get the b&m it comes with great instrustions and labels every part for you so you know what they are talking about. There are a total of 4 bolts to remove and the the shifter drops down out of the car. After that there are two bolts that you remove to pull shifter from the Change Extension ( the long rod that holds the shifter). After that you take the ball seat ( a little rubber thing that the ball of the shifter sits in) And clean it out and relube it with the grease they send you. Remove the rear join collar ( a little pipe that goes through the bottom of the bolt hole on the shifter) and thats where the bushings go. then you lubercate them. I had to pund mine out of my stock shifter, i never put it in my other short throw. After that you put everything back together.

pdiggitydogg there is no heat shield by my shifter, well actuall there is but its around the pipe rather than a big sheet of metal bolted to it. I never had a problem with vibrating, how ever my car is a 94. So sohc_vtec 2NR you may want to head his advice since you have the same car as him. You won't have any problems doing it.

stiffens it up a lot better. the oe bushings are soft squishy rubber material that deteriorates a lot over time and eventually becomes crap over just a few yrs. the new bushings made of a rubber polymer or urethane are more durable and improve the quality of the shift overall

and aftermarket bushings last longer too...i'd say its a necessity when gettin' a new shifter..
