auto vs. manual

A friend of mine at work has a 1980-something civic with intake and exhaust and its a manual. One night after work we decided to race our cars on the freeway, starting from a light in front of the onramp. Off the line I wooped his old piece of ish. However, at around 95mph he started gaining and eventually passed me. DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THAT PI$$ED ME OFF????? And that was an old civic with ***-knows how little hp! Is my automatic transmission destined to get spanked by these manual civics, or is there a way to have the advantage. Will mods like i/h/e help me gain more accelaration at the higher speeds that my auto so despeately lacks? Help me.

Well, if you want more topend power, airflow mods will help you out there. Do I/H/E and then race him again.

Does top end power mean power derived while close to the redline, or at high speeds? I whooped upon him until we got to higher speeds, then he slowly passed me.

Well, topend means on the upper portion of the RPM band, not speed. This will help you out overall though, because you obviously go through all the gears.

My car redlines at the following speeds:

1st: 30-35mph
2nd: 67-70mph
3rd: 100-105mph
4th: -

All I know is that when I reached 4th gear he was still slowly gaining distance. My engine is still stock, but he has intake and exhaust on a manual tranny. Like 94 EX said, I'm gonna install i/h/e, then smoke him.

One little question:
Will i/h/e increase the engine's redline?

No, they won't increase your redline. The redline is an RPM range that represents your engine's limit. You need to do internal work to raise the redline.

Also, those tall gears from your auto aren't helping, but you should be fine after you get I/H/E.

i/h/e will give you the bottom end to smoke him off the line and pull several car lengths on him and he wont be able to catch up.
im surprised his car can even hang with yours. must be more than i/h/e for him.

Not to contradict your statement, but I/H/E will help the upper powerband more than the lower.

thanks dudes!
Like I said, I already spank him off the line, that I know.
He just ends up catching up later on. I need to figure out how much my speeding ticket will be, then I'll start the i/h/e. What do you guys think the gains will be from AEM CAI, DC heads, and GReddy exhaust. That's the plan at least.

By the way, I've seen some civics and integs that sound really agressive under the hood during accelaration. Is that because of i/h/e. Would mind my ride sounding like that

Your ride will sound more aggressive with I/H/E, and you'll gain soemwhere between 10-15hp to the wheels maybe. It should be enough to take him though.

kinda depressing, all that money will only get 10-15hp? Oh well, I'm getting it anyways.

Yeah, 10-15 to the wheels. If you really want power, you'll need to go FI or swap.

FI? Is that Forced induction?
thats turbo right? I was told that that will eat up my tranny, since I'm riding and auto. Is there anything else I can do W/O a swap?

Well, without a swap of FI (yes that's forced induction), you can do bolt ons, fuel system, ignition work, and actual engine work if you have the money. You can make the car quicker, but your engine doesn't have the potential of the H22A.
