Finally

Well guys i finally have the opportunity to do something big to my car. Lately i've been pondering on a big mod to do for next year ( either a turbo on the d16y8 or swap in a b series). As luck would have it one of my friends works in a junkyard and found a b18 in very good condition( 30k-35k miles where my civic has 34k). He said he would be able to sell it to me for $800!! Now i figure that's an awesome price so what would i need to make this engine work in my civic. Also he said the wiring harness may have been cut :/ so how would i go about getting to work right?
Also tell me if you think this is a good idea, i mean the price seems good so i figured i'd get some second opinions. i also thought i could rebuild the engine.

A b18 what? A b18b or a b18c?

$800 is an awesome deal if its a b18c, b18n at $800 is a decent deal. It all depends on what you are going to do with you car as to weather or not you should get the enigine.

Also if i were you, i wouldn't even mess with that wiring hanress, just get a new one.

check the OBD differences as well. Is this $800 come with tranny? You will also need a B18x ECU.

ok well i don't have a lot of information on it, but i should be going to see it within the next few days. The harness should be intact because it is still in the rear-end totaled car. I'm not sure if it's a b18c or b18b, but what are the differences. It also comes with a tranny, but i could just use my d16y8 trans no? Also i heard many people talking about cable trannys and hydraulic trannys, so is this going to add complications to my swap if i do go for it?

the main reason i'm considering this whole project is because i want some moderatly big power, and i'd like to enter my car in some shows. The D series is a rather limited platform, therefore i figure if i can get this other motor, it will leave me with many more options.

c has higher compression and vtec and great tranny gearing
b is low compression - good turbo motor, long tranny gears

seehere for specs

No, you need to use the b series tranny, the d's will not work.
Depending on the year of the motor, it will be hydro or cable trans. Anything 92+ is hydro, so I doubt you have anything to worry about.

ok, well i'm hoping it's a b18c, because i love the vtec and i don't i'm going to turbocharge it. Therefore i think i'd something else like a set of cams and maybe upgrade some other parts of the valvetrain. Also what type of tranny does my d16 have and if the motor is the other kind, would it still work?

oh one more thing, it the motor is a b18b, i could possibly get a b18c head and swap it so i could have vtec, correct?

putting a vtec head on and ls block is called ls/vtec....it doesnt work.
Just dont even bother with it.
For a track motor its great, but daily it just doesnt survive long.

Chances are it will be a b18b

wow you guys are so helpful!!! Ok well i figure 8 bills is a steal so i'm probably going to go for it, and i shouldn't have any problems with that transmission and my car right? also for mods on that engine, what are some good ones to consider, besides forced induction.

800 for a complete swap is a good deal
(thats usually the price of a long block)

You can still go valvetrain to rev higher and keep making power.
You could up the compression
All mods that you can do to any motor still apply, but the ls takes to turbo like woa.

If it turns out to be a b18c then more of the itr/ctr parts are an option for good power and honda reliability.

S'all good...I forget that not everyone speaks the lingo.
Integra(i) and Civic(c) type(t) r
ITR-------------CTR

To up compression most people just install domed pistons (Ive started to call it "hemi-fying").
You could also mill the head.
Longer rods works, but its basically not done.

i see, thanks for the lingo lesson lol And it is possible to mill the head? hmm i don't know of many machine shops in my neck of the woods (literally). Therefore should i just install a set of cams and do rods, that type of stuff?

Id leave the engine building to the pros
Everything has very tight limitations and its easy to screw it up, if youre not 100% sure of what youre doing.

What kind of gains are you looking to get out of it?

hmmm valueable advice. I want ample power ( 200ish) at the wheels nothing rediculous, and it needs to have reliability. In other words i don't want the power to come on at 8k rpms in my fully ported and polished race motor for cruising up and down main street, i need some ideas that have good power and are streetable. (affordable fits in nicely as well)

Either B-series (B18B, B18A, or B18C1...and for this matter.....for B18C5) will not give you 200 hp at the wheels if kept on stock form. B18C1 averages 140-150 whp while B18C5 (or JDM ITR B18C) will only net around 170-178 whp. If you plan to turbo later, then you will be suprised on how much power you can gain on a B18B since the lower compression provides plenty of room for boost...... not all turbo set-up is unrealiable. I have been boosting my D-series since early 2000. I have not yet go through major headaches...knock on wood. 10 psi daily driver is sweet...

Ive seen dyno charts of stock gsr's w/ the only upgrade as ihe and ctr pistons that are between 180-190 whp. Of course, the compression in that setup would be 12:1 and 91octane at the least would have to be run...

With that you could also run larger cams and whatnot but because of the larger domed pistons you might run into clearance problems (may even run into them w/ stock cams).

200 would be easily obtained through turbo though...very easily

tru tru, that was my other consideration was boosting the D. Thermalfi'd16, It says you're running a greddy turbo (and at around $2500 it's not as bad as the edelbrock system price wise) but where did you find your intercooler, and how did you go about installation, tuning, etc?
