Hexed MP3's...my latest idea

Its so simple, I'm still trying to find somebody that has already done it. So far i've come up with nothing.

I was thinking one day, if the RIAA has such a problem with mp3 files running around, why not make all the mp3 files disappear?

Here is what you do. Open an mp3 file in a Hex editor (I use Hex Workshop 4). Select everything. Paste that into a text file. Send it to whoever (or post it on a web site). The receiver just has to open another hex editor, copy and paste from the text file, name it whatever.mp3, and play it.

A hex editor is required, windows notepad does not like to interpret non textual files. It did it anyway, but the resulting mp3 had pops and skips to it. oh well.

Anyway thats my idea. The trick I've found is trying to find any web hosting services that will allow large files. I think this is one for p2p and irc.

I'm still messing around with this, but let me know what you think and/or discover.

^ no it is a corrupt file, either it happened in the download process, or the dumbass on the otherend knows that it is corrupt and likes sharing it?

i suspect those files are put out intentionally by anti-sharing crusaders...whatever. Its very unlikely it happend within the download process. It was either ripped incorectly (VERY common) or was intentially fuxored.

I did some further testing on my idea, it works but there is a downside: the hex text file becomes about 66% bigger than the original file. compression helped a little but the file is still about a meg bigger than the original file. Plus there would be no real way to share these files short of p2p services (free web hosting doesnt allow files over 1 meg to be posted.).

I ask a friend of mine to design a program that would reduce the hex text file a bit to make my idea somewhat workable, but seems like more trouble than its worth. i'll keep you posted if i have any breakthroughs.

In the meantime, use BitTorrent!
