how hard is it to install a short shifter into a 99 civic? and what all do i need??

its not so hard. you need to get underneath the car to do it. remove the extension mounting bracket and the extension rod then pull out the whole shifter assembly.

Yeah, its not hard at all. The biggest pain is working around the exhaust. My suggestion is to replace the shift bushings when you do it, itll cut down on vibration and rattles and feel so much better.

I can't find my DIY right off hand for this but it's not a hard job at all....I would also recommend getting some bushing for this mod as it wil make a diff. I got a set of Neuspeed bushings for mine off www.ebay.com and love them.

you basically have a couple bolts up top in the inside of the car and then the linkage and like 5 bolts or so to complete the installation. The Exhaust might give you a little hassle but you can work around it...

you need to remove the center console of course to get to the two bolts holding the shifter bracket in place. a 2nd person comes in handy here but of course isnt necessary. putting in a short shifter is like a 30m job, good luck.

ok i ordered my shifter and i get it tomorrow!! now i have never done anything like this before, is it a job that a first timer can do?

it's easy but many first timers tend to overtorque bolts. Watch out for that.

Tight enough so they dont fall off..

Honestly.. I just tightened them until they were pretty snug but not super tight.

well i put it on today and it is longer then the original one after the ball thing, so it rattles off my exhaust sometimes!!!

it's rattling on the heat sheild on your stock exhaust. people with aftermarket problems don't have that problem. Bend that hanger and u'll be fine. What kind of short shifter u get?

It shortens the throw between gears. ie. if you had to move the stick approx. 6 inches to shift from 1-2 before, maybe you only have to move it 4. It will allow you to switch gears quicker.

there are 2 different things
short throw shifter
short shifter

people usually just say short shifter for both

short throw shifter - shortens the shifting throw from gear to ger

short shifter - just lowers the shifter... Most of the non name stuff out there is this...

Hi,
I've been considering getting a short (throw) shifter for a while now and figured that since i will be putting a new exhaust on soon i should do the shifter as well, because the exhaust won't be getting in the way

i found some good deals on OBX shifters and was wondering if anyone knows if OBX is a decent company

i really don't have the $100 plus for a DC shifter as i just purchased a Thermal R&D cat back exhaust

also i plan on getting some new bushings
if anyone knows of some other DIY sites or articles that talk about bushings i would love it

don't get OBX it will snap in half. I did a group buy before for the short throw shifter/bushings/fed ex shipping for $100. If your inteterested the shifter is by solo and the bushings are by prothane. Send me an email BClaps@twcny.rr.com

thanks for telling me about OBX, sometimes no name stuff works allright and sometimes it breaks in half. better to not find out the expensive way

i was looking at some neuspeed bushings on ebay for $12, i thought that was a good deal
what companies make good short throw shifters for a decent price?
i saw an auction for a "SC Sports" short throw shifter
the logo is similar to DC sports so i'm sure it's a rip off but i thought it might not be a bad deal, unless you have heard that those break in half as well

get a solo/neuspeed/c's those are the only ones i'd ever recommend. Don't wanna have to pay twice know what i mean?

well i have solved my problem with the shifter!! i bought a neuspeed shifter with new bushing's and it works great!! They make the pilot shifter too long!

APC are garbage. A kid down the street from me owns a Cavalier and he got an APC shifter and it broke the second day where the hole is. He got another one for free from APC and it did the same damn thing a week later AND the bend became warped prior to that! Go with a higher name brand. I got a B&M from http://www.optauto.com/webstore/ for like $50. Most other places charge $100 for the same stick.

garbage huh? i guess the fact ive had mine for 2yrs and have absolutely no complaints makes it garbage.

I have a B&M short throw shifter, I also had an OBX shifter. It snapped in half when the shift knob got stuck. Go with B&M, it's much heavier and strong than most shifters out there. It may have a bit of resistance at first, but you get used to it in no time. Good luck.
