VTEC Activation Question

Sup guys,

I have a 98 Civic EX. When does the VTEC actually kick in (RPM's). Also, I saw somewhere that you can install a light that comes on when the vtec is activated. Anyone know about this? Thanks!

dont know about the light, but i know the vtec doesnt kick in until 5,000 rpm. so pretty much its kinda useless unless you have a vtec controller which you can program to kick in at a lower rpm

Not really. Hondas make their power in the upper RPMs.

The lights are just tapped into the VTEC solenoid wire I believe. You can get the kits on eBay that have everything for a few bucks.

You can get all the parts needed for your VTEC light at radio shack for 2 or 3 bucks, or you can get the kit off of e-bay that comes with the little light to put in your gauge cluster.

This link will give you an idea of what needs to be done to do this. It maybe a little different for your car, but same idea.

If you do it let us know how you like it. Ive thought about doing it, but am kinda lazy.

is there a known benefit for doing this project?? i would really get a shift light instead...coz im imagine, if you vtec your car all the time like me, you'll be annoyed by that light.. i've seen people do this and just after a while, it gets old and they get rid of it..
jus my opinion...

There really is no benefit for this light, and I personally wouldn't mess with it. It is just something to do purely for looks IMHO. You don't shift based on VTEC, you shift based on RPM, so like SWIFT said, maybe you should check out a shift light.

WOOO who said anything about shifting?? This just tells you when VTEC is engaged! Nothing to do with shifting... The only reason that I can think of the VIL being useful is if theres something wrong with you VTEC and its not kicking in because maybe you have a bad solenoid or something..

Very True i own a 98 honda Ex and it get lil bit loud at 5000rpm but at 5500 is when it kicks in. On the VTEC controller i heard they are useless so there is no point of getting one cuz the VTEC like someone says makes it power oh higher rpms... so its really a waste of money

Its got alot to do with way the Cam is lobed I believe.. You will get alot more out of a VTEC controller with a custom ground or aftermarket cam, then you will with a stock cam:o

Although, it will let you tune some other stuff also..

I can't say for sure, but so long as its 25P you should be ok. I can't decode the info in my Helms to tell you for sure.

Changing the VTEC cross-over on a basically stock motor isn't gonna do anything other than hurt you. Honda knew what they were doing when they placed it at 5500..
