Clear coat cracking...need some help!

I just bought this car and new about it.
The clear coat is beginning to crack in little "x" like spots on the hood and on top of the car..and a little on the trunk.

Now my mechanic said it will totally come off in about 1-3 years (he's a normal mechanic...not a body one! so I cna't take this word for word)

is there anything I can do to maybe buff it with some wax to take this away or am I basically screwed?

or is there something that will lengthen the time it'll take to crack?

any help would be helpful lol
