Electrical Fire...LED's

ok i don't know if this is in the right forum but whatever..maybe brandon can help me here.....me and my freind were installing L.E.D's on the windshield spray nozzles...and we wired them right to the battery... then each together.. to come on ..obviously.. at the same time...everything was working fine.....then a minute later smoke was coming from the wires....they all got toasted!..I had to rip em outa there with my bare hands (OUCH)...how and where should i hook those things up too!! we also tried the lighter...but it screwed up and now it doesn't work...... its REAL weird.... i also wanted a switch somewhere any ideas how to hook that up too? thanks... oh ya .. we didn't blow any fuses.......
