Has anyone ever hacked their cell phone?
A while back I got a new cell phone...a Motorola E815. The thing is like a fucking mini computer. It's ridiculously capable (plays mp3s as ringtones, plays video, takes pictures, etc.), so I figured I'd buy a data cable and transfer some mp3s I liked as ringtones as well as some pictures. Wrong. My carrier (Verizon) completely neutered the phone so you'd pay money for their shitty "get it now" feature. I'm not sure what "it" is, but I'm sure it has something to do with a deep brooding rage and limitless contempt. Their selection was criminally bad as was the fact that it's not even available where I live. Add to that the fact that file transfering was totally disabled, and we've got a problem. So, in light of their sever shortcomings, I decided to go a different route...to fuck Verizon. I found a program that will do seem edits (editing the hex code on the phone via the data cable) to force it to accept what I wanted to do with the phone...which is admittedly nothing fancy, just what the phone should have done in the first place. I can't be the only one who's ever done something like this. In my case it worked like a charm. That said, my contempt for Verizon now rivals that of my contempt for hippies...and you better believe that's a hell of a lot of contempt.
