Canadians, help me out

This may seem like a wierd question, but I've always wondered.

Where does the term "canuck" originate?

I know the derivation of the term "hoser" but never could figure out what the hell a canuck is.

And if it's supposed to be derogatory, I'm sorry. And why does a hockey team use it if it is supposed to be?

If I'm not mistaken, a hoser is a Northern Canadian. Apparently they wear funny hats up there. You've probably seen them in movies, with the tube looking (or hose looking) thing that goes around the hat and over their ears.

Hosers.

nope you'd be wrong... its the hockey team as stated before. And we never call ourselves canucks, its only the americans that say shit like that.

As for the hoser hates, ya where its really cold you'll see them. I never see them in Toronto. You've seen them on south park though...

hoser hats? you mean touques?

Or, according to mw, tuque:

Main Entry: tuque
Pronunciation: 'tük, 'tyük
Function: noun
Etymology: Canadian French, from French toque -- more at TOQUE
Date: 1871
: a warm knitted usually pointed stocking cap
