How old is too old?

Ok everyone, what age do you think is too old to still be living at home?

I'm 22 and I still live at home mostly cause I still can. My dad and stepmom haven't kicked me out yet, nor would they. I could probably afford to live on my own, but I might as well take advantage of living at home while I can. All that they provide me with is a home and food, I provide everything else for myself.

I'd say that once you're out of school and have a steady job, it's time to get a place of your own....but until then stay at home as long as you can....

I didn't have that option, I've been living on my own since I was 18.......

I'm 22 and still living at home...mostly because of school...I've been trying to get into school...and I was told as long as I'm saving for school then I can live at home....but as soon as I get into school then Im out...the reason i'm out because school is a province over in Manitoba....So no I don't think 22 is to old...23 is pushing it...24....IMHO...OUT!!

Hmm... I live in my apartment about 9 months out of the year. I go home for most of summer and Christmas break though. I don't know... I guess you should move out when you have a steady job.

for real! when i graduate, if by some unholy act of god i end up living back in my home town(i really dont want to) i'll try to make really good income and live at home for a year of so, so im finacialy stable when i do move out. i CAN spend as low as 4k a year if need be, so if im making really good money and living at home... more power to me!

If your parents allow you to stay, and it is fine with them, how is it mooching? I'd say that they are just trying to help him/her get off a better start.
If you have a full time job it doesn't mean you have to spend the money. What if the parents wanted her/him to save up and get their own place/car/education/whatever!

shes educated, owns a car, has a FULL time job and surly makes enough money to pay for rent. Maybe your parents dont mind you stay but just because they dont say anything about it dont make it right. Thats whats wrong with so many people today, they have poor judgement and often over stay their welcome and start being a burdon to their parents who have already given so much. If she can't afford rent with a full time job its not because her check isn't big enough its because she shops to much. Thats the sad reality of it. Feel free to argue with me all you want.

If it's alright with your parents if you live with them, then it's alright...it's not like it actually matters...

I'm 22...have a full time job...and go to school full time. I'll graduate in May, and keep a full time job. But I know when I graduate I'm not going to be financially ready to live on my own, so I'll stay at home to save up some $$$. But I will be paying like $50 to my mom (even though she doesn't ask for it) every week. I figure that's fair cuz thats what my sis gives her every week since she moved back home.

I would typically tend to agree with Mt. Biker on this...but I do know Erin personally (duh) and she isn't at all mooching off her parents. The only thing she doesn't pay for is food (and a lot of the time she goes out to eat, and pays for that herself) and she doesn't pay rent. But if her parents don't ask for it, then techincally, she shouldn't have to pay it. The only reason I would is because it's just the way I am.

I completely understand where your coming from Rob! But I'm not mooching by any means. I may have a full time job now, but I just started and I'm not finacially stable to move out on my own yet. I enjoy living at home for now. I get to spend time with my brother before he leaves for college and my dad when our schedules allow it. He won't be around forever, so I'm going to take advantage of my time with him while I can. My dad has never pressured me to do anything I'm not ready for. When I feel I'm ready, then I will.

I gotta partially disagree with you on this one, Rob. I feel ya on the mooching, however not everybody is. For example, my parents want me to move back home. They'd rather me live at home than 1000 miles away. Ever since my bro and I left they've had pretty bad "empty nest" syndrome.

I'd rather live at home for now as well. Paying rent for an apartment is simply a waste of money. You get less for more and build no equity. I'd like to be able to live at home and save money for a fat down payment on a house, something my parents would also like me to be able to do. But paying $845/month rent plus bills, etc etc etc it's kinda hard to save up the cash to buy a house.

I've got a couple of friends who have full-time jobs similar to mine, have been working a couple of years and have lived at home their whole lives. They're both 25 and both went to school locally (UT). They're just saving the bucks to buy houses in the next year or two. I don't think it's mooching for them either, similar to me they have pretty tight families.

Of course it's also not mooching when you buy food, help with housework, cook, and help provide some home improvements for the parental units.

At least that's my $.02.

I'd say 24-25 is a good "absolute cutoff". I mean, honestly, get on with your life. To spooge's point - sure, it makes more financial sense to live at home if you can until you're ready to buy a house. Why not stay a little longer to save up a bigger down payment and same some interest $$$.

However, you learn to fly by jumping out of the nest. There's a lot more to living on your own (in terms of growing up) then just paying rent, and I think it's valuable to give it a shot as soon as you're ready. Having parents to fall back on is a bonus for when you screw up.

Of course, this is coming from my point of view - I was on my own at 16.

I think its good to be on you own.. But if you can get away with living with parents until you can get out and get your dream house and be able to afford to live happily youll be much better off.

Just because you live at home doesnt mean your dependant, it just means your not wasting money on an apartment..

Now if your just living at home for free and wasting all of your money on beer or drugs. Then you shouldnt be there.. You should be on your own learning responsibility.
