Because they guy didn't lift off the gas. If you watch his launch, you can see the car get a little out of shape and the car moves side to side a little due to loss of traction. If he was a smarter driver he would've lifted and saved the car instead of hoping he'd hook and risking the car and his life. I suppose he could've had a problem like a broken axle...but that almost always produces a MUCH more violent turn. More like a jerk than a drift.

Nope. Rear steer usually claims at LEAST one car a year on any given track. At least that's what I've seen. The guy in the other lane is damn lucky he was faster than the dude that crashed. A lot of those kinds of crashes take out both cars.
