Now this is a truly good idea, and we have the russians to thank for it!

This is basically a company out of Russia offering up TONS of full mp3 albums. The first response is "So What? We have iTunes, and napster, etc." This is true but either they charge a monthly fee for DRM protected WMA files, or they charge about a dollar a song. That's outrageous, and not a viable option for most of us. This russian site offers nonDRM, regular mp3s as a pay as you go service.

Enter Mp3search.ru, where you can get a full album in professionally ripped mp3s for 10 cents a track! That's right, most of my full albums i've already downloaded have costed me about $1.60. That's more like it! I'll gladly pay that for a gaurenteed good rip.

What you do is register an account, put money on your account (the minimum is $20) using Chronopay. As near as I can tell, Chronopay is similar to paypal, but is stationed somewhere in the UK. You gove your creditcard number to chronopay in the amount of $20, and now you are ready to buy/download music. So far, I have downloaded 14 full albums, and the lowest bitrate is 192kbps. some are variable, but they were ripped leetly, so they sound the same as or better than cbr. Download speeds are surprisingly good, anywhere between 100k/s-200k/s. Unfortunatly the connection goes down pretty frequently (what do you expect, its in russia), but you are given a download history, and you can redownload anything you buy for "several days". Its been almost 2weeks and i can still get everything from day one.

My only problem is that my browser gave me a warning that the connection to chronopay was not secure, even though the server said it was. Even so, I used a Virtual Account Number (service offered through Citi-bank) so the number is only good for that merchant. helps prevent fraud.

Check this service out, it really is a great deal, and there are tons of albums. I joined this mostly because the stuff i wanted could not be found on IRC or any of the usual sources. Here I got them in less than 5 minutes.

this is "buying" music. If you don't mind not having hard copys of your music, or don't mind the mp3 format, this is a superior option.

you'll continue paying $15+ dollars for some plastic and paper with artwork, containing the same music you can get for nearly 15x less? have fun with that....

Aaron, I think you have to look at the quotes around the word buying.

And $15 is being generous. Most of the popular newer CDs go for as high as $19. There's no way I'm paying that for a $.02 piece of aluminum and some plastic. If I REALLY like a CD I'll buy it just to support the artist that made it (even though most of that gets thieved by music companies). It's only fair to give something back when someone creates something great.
