Is 3k recommended for the 5th gens?
For 6th gens, 5W20 and every 7500 miles or 6 months is the recommended oil change interval with a filter change every 15k or once/year, whichever happens first. That is for the "normal" schedule. The severe schedule calls for 3k and 3 months. Even if you have the right weight, some high mileage cars will prefer natural oil over synthetic. b |

Because oil breaks down from the heat (among other things) caused by your motor when driving. I guess the 3000 mile interval is just a saftey mark for when you should change you oil.

also most of if not all of the additives they put in there oil (which really make it the oil) will breakdown after that long... in the case of mobil 1 they re-designed their oil because the additive lasted too long... now they breakdown just like the rest.
It's also because no matter how well oiled or good your car is there will always be TINY metal fragments (even dust) that will harm your engine if it's left in there. Change your oil often and your filter too.. even if my car manufacturer recommended changing the oil once a year I'd do it every 3k... it's just not worth risking damage to your engine.

5w20 on the 7th Gen (at least six cyl engine) and 7500 miles (normal driving) according to Honda.
Of course, if you don't want to change your oil, you could wait until the engine seizes, and then you'll understand why you should have. |

it'd take a LONG time to seize an engine from simpley not changing the oil...
I've seen 3+ year old oil come out of a running car.

if you're buying a new car change it right away like 60-100miles on her, and then you can go to 3k. The reason for this is because the first little while is when everything wears... cheers

now a quick question to you would be.. what would be so bad about taking all the metal and crap out of your oil before it bonds to other parts? See there is NO manufacturer that says change your oil in the first 100miles, but if you new two shits about breaking a motor in you would realize that about 90% of the break in of a new motor is done in the first 100miles. This means that most of the 'extra' crapy is pumped into your oil in the first 100miles of a 3000 miles oil. So you're telling me you want to drive 2900miles with metal shaving in your oil? And now the filter doesn't catch it once the gears mash it into a paste and thats when it bonds to parts reducing the space for oil to penrate. And over the life of the motor this 'extra' metal attached will be what gives you the greatest power lose. How about you do your research before you come in here telling me how wrong I am. I would educate you on this but i really dont have the time search for motoman and read up on what this dude says about motors. Thanks for proving to me you dont know what your talking about, try google next time instead of going to honda.com. edit// read this foo schooled I'll add you dont even have to follow his break in method but for god sakes take the oil out early and do your motor a favour. |

![]() funny how this guy knows so much abut cars but the Honda Enginners design these engines to go 200k w/o any problems and that's with the prior 3k intervals, now they are designed to go 7.5k on an oil change because of an updated PCV system. And FWIW i have read that guys info and severly disagree with his opinions but like he says it's a controversial topic(every dealer tech and engine builder that i would deal with disagrees with him). You do realize that even changing the oil after 100 miles the rings don't even completely seat for about 2k miles right?? oh and you realize that a loose motor makes power, loose=fast but short lived tight=less powerful but lasts longer. Sorry but i'll trust our guys in our R&D department, they tend to have a good idea of what's going on. But i wouldn't know anything about all that. Jeremy |

unless your oil filter is about the grade of a water filter on a brita you aren't going to get all the metal out of the oil... guess R&D forgot to inform you on that. Yes a loose motor produces more power, but one that doesn't seal right doesn't. I question where you get your information cause it sounds like you just know how to run your mouth. I'll say it again, you dont have to follow his break in method. I wasn't saying you had to, he just worded the oil thing better then I could. So if you dont believe that your engine 'sheds' that much metal in the first 100miles get your R&D to run a test, compair 100mile oil change to a 3k oil change and tell me how much more metal is in the 3k over the 100miles. Once you do that, and have proof one way or another (since you dont believe) then feel free to run your mouth. Cause as far as i'm conserned you're just talking shit for the sake of talking shit. As for me I offered information "change your oil after the first 100miles" that could do NO damage. Where you came along and opened your mouth for no good reason, cause if you knew what you were talking about you would realize there is NO harm in changing your oil early but rather more to gain from it then not. So dude zip it,cause theres a good chance someone might know something you dont know and if you go shooting down information everytime it doesn't match whats in your head then you aint gonna ever learn. I'm gonna say that jsut because a motor will 'run' for 200k doesn't mean its worn in properly nor does it mean its producing the max power if could be if treated correctly. I guess you aren't worried about power loose, are we not on a performance forum? God this is like working with childern, everyone has to be an expert at being a dick. STFU if you dont know what you're talking about, I dont know why i even wasted teh time to type this up cause its wasted on people like you. Hope someone worth while reads this and enjoys the benifit of ONE early oil change, heaven forbid you might learn from someone else, pull your head out of your ass dude. Thanks for being a dick! |

the reason you shouldn't change the oil till at LEAST 1000 mi. is becasue those tiny shavings that the filter doesn't catch smooth out all the little imperfections in your cylinder walls and as the dude said your rings WILL NOT SEAT PROPERLY if you change the oil too quickly... even engine builders will tell you this... those shavings are the best honing equipment in the world.

lol...well it was never meant to come off as being a dick, just passing along the info that is passed along to me. Good luck on your motors, i know the stroker i just put in tonight is running fine.
Don't forget that break in oil has a special additive to remove the deposits of assembly lube from bearing surfaces and block surfaces. |

there wasn't any attitude in my first post in this thread.... but whatever dont change your oil until the manufacture says so but maybe just maybe someone knows something you dont know that you might wish you'd done. So in 3 years when you've finally put enjoy pennies together to mod your civic or accord you'll find you have to do more mods/work to get her running faster. And there is NO harm in changing the oil early like sugested. As for my beer consumption well thats just totally off topic.... |
