Teach me to weld!!
Anyone on the east coast who can teach me to weld?? Shit at this point I would almost be able to travel to the next state just to freakin learn. I really don't have time for classes right now.. I am not that flexible with my job.. must... learn... to .... weld...

im a beast at welding now.. i practice EVERYDAY..... but i dont live by ya man.... i just asked how on this site and i got some posts how... now im the beast from the east, my teacher even wonders how i weld so good...not be bragging or anything, mostly cuz of teh HS members telling me how...
what kind of welding tho, i can tell u everything uneed to know... |

u can buy refillable bottles on line, and you can get them from a local welding company usually, alsmo argon and CO2, they are used to blow oxygen out of the way so you dont get splatter
Splatter= when welding will shoot out lil bubbles of wire and make little dots of hard metal. easy to take off. if using a gas, set the pressure to 20PSI, so when u pull the trigger it will blast out the argon cor2 mix so it will not hit oxygen and flame and reduce splatter.... using MIg there should be a chart on the side of on the inside of the door on the machine... ther eare diferent settings, the can be labeled in numbers, and letters..etc.. there is a heat setting, higher for thicker metals, lower for thinner metals or metals that melt easier (tin) the guage of the metal will determine what heat setting to put it on.... then there is a wire feed (if you have wire feed) it determines how fast the wire comes out of the tip... that all depends how fast you go accross the metal or if your buring hotter it will melt the wire faster so u need to raise the wire speed...... before you start the weld the MAIN thing you plan on welding, get some metal thats the same guage and find the perfect settings... and sandblast or use a wire brush on the part that your welding, clean off all impurities, paint is very hard to weld through...... ok now to welding.... there are differect ways that you will be batter at pulling-is when u will the welder accross the metal... or pusher is when u push the welder accross the metal... i am a puller i find it easier... when welding you want to make a whole bunch or small Cs. when your welding or go in a circular motion... if you start burning through the metal that means that your to hot or going to slow..turn down the temp.... ifyou get clumps that means your also goign to slow or the wire feed it to high, when welding always keep quater to half of inch away from the metal you dont want the tip of the welder being right down on the metal... and you dont want it 50 feet away.. so quater to half an inch is perfect.... once in a while take off the tip which just screws off and clean it out with a screw driver... that can cause bad welds... and ALWAYS use a welding helmet, YOU DO NOT WANT WELDERS FLASH, it hurts like hell... youll wake up in the middle of the night and feel like a bucket of sand in your eyes and a fat man is standing on it grinding it in..... but i think thats about it... |

ALSO THEIR IS A GROUND CLAMP.... always put the clamp on a metal table that ur welding on so it can have a current, mig is all about electricity.... attach the clamp to a vice... and weld in the vice...

man i wish i could weld. one time when i was younger i went to this camp and the beds were made of metal and they would squeak all the time if i were a welder i would go back to that camp and weld those beds together

there are tons of kits out there, they best 2 out there are Lincoln and Miller, they have some nice home ones, but also very very nice big ones but they put a nice whole in your pocket....for some encouragement, if this is your first time dont do it. practice all the time... it takes a while to get use to it.. tons of supprises that will come you way.... iek a spark coming in your mask or hair... your tip getting stuck to the metal... get the hang of it before u start doing body modification....

auto darkening helmets kick ass..... in buying a welder.... i would only perfer Miller and Lincoln, i have a couple of both and i love them....it depends what kind of outlets you have in your house... like 110s or 220s.. my warehouse is all 220s... so e got a 220 kit...

mostly just more power..... heres a perfect kit for you, its for beginner and expert, i think its ran off a 110.. i will have to look its called a Lincoln arc welder SP 125 plus.... arc and mig are almost the same exact thing..... basically no difference at all.. thats the kit i use ALOT.

I use the wire feed version "splatter". It doesnt really splatter much once you get used to it. I think the key is not to get too scared of it. You have to be close to the metal.....literally about a foot. I just learned last week... It's really addictive. I welded all my intercooler and turbo piping. I'll show pics later......

thermal is so true, once u get over teh scareness and get use to it, its so so much fun..... its like an art that you have full control of the metal and can make anything.... then u go welding crazy.... and make sure u get a full mask... dont get jsut the goggles or u will get welders burn, which is like sun burn but 10x worse... but anyways welding it awsome everyone should do it...

well not a welder but i heard that most of the fram and suspension work should be done with TIG welding. leave the body work to the MIG.

I'm a big fan of oxy-acetylene welding myself...although MIG would come in handy more for what you want. Oxy is just so much easier...once you know the melting points of different metals and the temperature of a neutral flame it's all cake. Metal Inert Gas (MIG) isn't quite as easy. If I were you I'd take the shit to a shop if you don't know the whole deal yourself. Welding is sooooo easy to fuck up that it's one of the few things I'm not ashamed to take to a shop to have done.

Well it gets me stuck sometimes.. for example.. I am moving everything for my ignition under the dash so I can smooth the firewall, but I have to weld in a platform to mount it on.. simple and it doesn't even have to look pretty, but for 2 weeks I have needed to do this but still have not. Once I get that done, I can reroute wires and finally get rid of all wiring from my engine compartment.

jesus i am not trying to be an ass but most of this is wrong..... Mig and "arc" have really nothing in common.....Mig uses wire where as arc uses rods that have to be changed. It is spatter not splatter that is what you do when you crash into a wall at 200 mph. Tig is not stronger. Stick (arc) will be the strongest. Tig is usually for exotic metal (aluminum, stainless steel) stuff like that. Mig can be done on aluminum. Mig is by far the easiest. b16 the picture of the perfect weld was of stick.not mig. Auto drakening hoods are not cheap at all. Co2 and argon do not displace air they simply "protect" the weld from impurities in the air. Also i live very close to michagan come on over ill show you how to stick arc. Mig would be best to use on your frame repair V8 because it is easy,strong,and convient and clean. Please ask any questions i will happily answer them if possible.

Yes ones like that from a department store arent much....but they are like performance parts you get what you pay for. Cheap price, cheap merchandise. The helmets i was talking was the solar power ones because on the battery ones if that battery gets to hot and melts and leakes acid all down your face your in trouble.
