Old school domestic tuner car
Ok...so I got to thinking after reading an article in a Mustang mag (which I know you guys are ALL about) that maybe Ford had the import market beat on it's small displacement sports cars. The article featured an old '84 Mustang SVO. For those who don't know, SVOs came with intercooled turbo'ed 2.3L 4 bangers, 4 wheel discs, koni adjustables, and up to 225hp FACTORY. They handle like go karts and are insanely easy to modify (had a friend with one that had an Esslinger head, stock cam, T3/T4 hybrid, and a front-mounted IC that made over 300hp at the wheels). So can it be true...did Ford have one of the first small displacement "tuner" cars in the American market (cuz let's face it...the British have been doing it for years)?

I suppose that depends how you define "muscle car". To me the muscle cars died out around '72-'73 right before the oil embargo. Shortly after that you start seeing cars with big block motors like 454s making power in the low 200hp range. Then out came the carbed small block motors making almost embarrassing numbers (150hp-200hp). Then the engines picked up a bit with fuel injection but to me fuel injection or any kind of computer control negates any chance at the title of "muscle car". But that's me. In '84 the SVO was your top choice in the Mustang line for power and handling. There are even a handful of "comp prep" models lying around with radio deletes and manual everything. It's just nice to see an American marketed car in '84 with a stock top speed somehwere slightly north of 150mph.

I don't really like it. I would take a 91 5.0 over that anytime.
