High speed internet question?

Okay. Here it goes... My friend has High speed internet access through AT&T. I just moved in with him and this other chick and we both have Apple computers. We are both still running 56k. QUESTION: If we are to buy a Ethernet Hub can we some how run his high speed internet connection to our computers as well? We (myself and this other gurl) have 10/100 Ethernet ports. Can we do this without the company finding out? Because I talked to a rep from AT&T the other day and they said they could do it, but it would tac on like 10 dollars (each) extra a month... HELP!

Router just divides the input internet signal into different ports, which you then plug your computer(s) into to get your share of the signal... you just gotta get an ethernet card in each of your computers as well... just run by a CompUSA or best buy or something and ask the guys there abt what you might need, then remember it, go home and get on the net and buy it online for about 40% less...

Okay, my friend already bought one. So once he gets home and we connect everything, what will I have to do on my computer settings wise? Will it just be like, once it is connected to the back of my computer I bring up IE and I am online? Sorry, I am a little slow when it comes to this. Thanks for the replies!

nope a hub won't work that easy. a router usually connects by itself to the internet by the protocols you already told it to: ppoe, always on. it's a lot easier and no computers will be the bottle neck.

a router has an uplink port for a cable modem.....the only way to really spread your High speed internet...you can use a hub but it's a hell of a lotta work....u have to use proxies and setup stuff....if you get a cable/dsl router all u have to do is intstall the network card....hook a cat5 (rj45) cbale from your computer to the router.....and then intstall the software...should do it automatilccy....or u can go expenisve like i did and get wirless (same stuff, no wires)

Router = intelligent hub..

if you do set it up with the hub, then to access the net, the host computer will have to be running..

get a router!

A hub is a BAD way to go. The signal gets divided automatically w/o regard to the internet traffic.

Take it back and buy a router. Seriously.
