Hmmm...crossroads

I've already mentioned this to Arnel, but I figured I'd get everyone's take on it. Recently I pulled my motor and all of the turbo stuff out of the Mustang. Originally I'd planned to freshen up the motor (new bearings, gaskets, hot tank, etc.) and clean all of the turbo parts that were getting dirty/rusty. Now I'm wondering if I really need to reinstall all of the stuff. I mean...do I really need 600hp+ on a daily basis? I think I'd be just as happy dropping in an N/A motor making around 400RWHP. Discuss.

Oh...and in case anyone cares, taking the place (temporarily) of the beast motor is a motor dubbed "The Loaner". It's actually mine, but it rarely gets used unless the real motor is out. It's the engine that came with the car with the addition of a cam, carb, and intake manifold. With the exhaust, it probably makes 225RWHP. It's sad really. The motor is dirty as hell, too. See for yourself.

well personally one reason i love a turbo car aside from the power is the sound, and the exponential power delivery. Although the only NA car i'd drive is something with rediculous vtec, otherwise i get bored. And yes i've driven mustangs, and they're fun, but i'd still take a high revving built b-series anyday. So i guess it's all personal preference. But yeah 600 hp in a street car that doesn't see the drags every week is kind of excessive.

i'd say keep it. as long as mechanically-wise its not a problem, you'll be bored if you lower hp. you can always drive it 5/10 of its capabilities, but you can't add the hp back whenever you need it for a quick street race or a cruise.

My best estimates put me between 15-20mpg in mixed driving (street and highway). Honestly, that's not much worse than my shitty truck which gets just over 20 shitty mpg with a shitty 190hp V6.

If your gas mileage is 15-20, dropping to 400 really isn't going to matter in that respect. So I vote for turbo. You really can't beat that feeling.

Does anyone really NEED 600hp on a daily basis? Hell no..

Would I want a 600hp car on a daily basis? Fuck YEAH!

Ultimately, the decision is up to you. It's your car, but if I could build a reliable 600hp car that I could drive daily, I'd do it in a heart beat. You don't have to you 100% of the power at all times, but it would be fun as hell when you want it. That's just my opinion.

The problem isn't that it's not reliable, but the block isn't supposed to be able to handle that much power. This will be the third time I've pulled it out for a refresh. The last block I had I cracked in short order (the one I have now is thicker and stronger). I'm just wondering if I want to keep this up or if I wanna toss in a crate motor and forget about it for 100K miles.

I can completely understand that. Performance always comes at a price. I guess you should just ask yourself, will you be happy with a less powerful car that you can just drive. Or would you drop in the NA crate, then start wishing you had more?
