i think the advantages are seen more because the high lift/ high duration lobes (vtec) allow you to get more air into the engine in NA trim. SO when it's boosted, it allows the valves to stay open higher and longer so you can force air in.
Trust me, vtec is still fun on a boosted engine. Just make sure nobody is watching you when those lobes change over
