.... where are you getting the term from?

To me, it could mean several things.
The automatic transmissions but where you can select the gears (steptronic or tiptronic or whatever...)

Or maybe a car with a short-throw shifter.

guessing from the price, its an auto w/ shifttronic.

not a true sequential shifter.

it's a tiptronic. I'm 90% sure because an actual clutchless car is pretty expensive. A celica never had that system done to it before...
but I tried the tip, don't really like it. Nothing special at all...

Sounds like a POS tranny. Go with the 6spd.

then i guess the sport shift in the ludes is junk too...it's a manually controlled automatic tranmission, the driver controls the shifting function and it can also be put into full auto mode if you don't want to be clicking gears.

there are buttons on the steering wheel to up and down shift. thats what 'sportshift' is on the celica. its still a 4 speed auto trans. its a good trans but if you want speed and fun--get the 6 speed gt-s. i have driven both and am basically unimpressed with the auto in almost any toyota as far as performance goes.

There are different degrees of automatic transmissions that use the "sportshift" technology. BMW's SMG-II gearbox is really impressive. Mercedes is even going to premier a 8-speed techtronic transmission. Even the Mazda 6s 5-speed automatic shifty thingy felt confident.

But if you want good launches, better driver control, and and more fun overall, get the damn manual. If you have to drive in bumper to bumper traffic daily, then maybe the sportshift tranny is for you.
