take off the catalytic converter
you'll see blocks of honeycomb material inside... take a screwdriver or chisel and a BFH and smash it into little tiny pieces till it all falls out... then re-install it. when you go for emissions testing you can stuff it full of steel wool and you'll pass (maybe) good luck.. P.S. a good hi-flow cat from catco will cost you 50 bucks... and probobly won't get you a HUGE fine.

hahah, roger that! I heard that the pro's use sandpaper to bore-out their engines, so I am just going to skip that step and suck in 25lbs of sand through my intake... But seriously, there's a long debate about the effectiveness of gutting out your cat. Some say it helps, other's say it hampers. The philosophy behind the "hurting horsepower" arguement is that the hot-gasses enter the cat, expend, get all garbled up, and have a hard time leaving the cat. This can create excess back-pressure. A performance cat (which start from around $50) is just a straight-pipe welded into a cat housing. It should also be known that if you do remove your cat, when you punch the gas, smoke will come from your exhaust. It's really your call. And as for the $500 fine... its $5000 in the state of California where emission standards are HARSH. They actually have vans parked on the side of the road, and when you pass them, it reads your emissions. Also, if you go to the street-racers and you're caught and your car's impounded; that's the first thing they look for. -Ducky

thats a test pipe... the performance cats still pass emissions, just allow more exaust to flow freely

just buy a hi-flo cat... my buddy has an rx-7 turbo ii and he got one from catco for 50 bucks and he said it was NIGHT AND DAY difference (he alread had the downpipe and exhaust on when he switched just the cat) For his car there will be a more noticable difference since it's turbo... but if you have a header and exhaust w/o a cat your wasting money... a header does virtually nothing without a cat.
I would definately NOT recommend permanently damaging a part on your car that... A. will cost you A LOT OF MONEY to replace. B. could just be replaced with a aftermarket piece for the same results with a TINY amount of added cost. C. Could result in the impounding of your car or a HUGE fine. Oh and your car will be WAY loud.... cops will notice.
