File Transfer, without using the net..
situation:
2 PCs hooked to one router(threw wich they access the web).. now when I transfer files from one to another -- using MSN messenger), the transfer rate is at around 3-4 m/s (would be faster but one of the PCs is very old -- P-100..).. IS the transfer I described happenging via the net? Or only LAN? I think its limited to LAN, since the upload speed with my ISP is like 25kb/s (and in this case I'm transfering at more than 150 times the ISP rate) .. I'm in dooubt because I use MSN messenger to transfer, and it is web based.. So I'm kinda worried it may count in my monthly usage..

It should be happening only across the router, and not out across the net..

LAN.
Agreed, why not just transfer them to a shared folder on the other system? |

ok, I setup the shared folder.. But I dont like this solution too much, since it automatically makes me more vulnerable.
Right now my network is tight.. but port scanners evolve, and that means I'll have to evolve consequently to make sure I stay well protected.. Its impossible to remain STEALTHlike forever..

If you know the port that MSN uses for file transfer(I don't use MSN), you can run netstat -a and it will list the open connections and their ports. If its an outside IP then its using you internet connection, which is most likely the case. The 3-4Mb connection would be due to it being so close(in this case 0 hops away).
You have a router right? That should have protection built in. You shared folders should be safe from outside viewing if your router is setup correctly.

oh yeah, my firewall tells me the remote ip.. I should check it that way.. good idea, thanks!
I do have a router, the linksys everyone has.. but the NATing itslef isnt 100% secure.. so I have to compensate with firewalls and stuff.. For the router setup, I dont think there's much I can do.. Only thing is need to make sure not have a DMZ host.. Anything else?

The Linksys router is fairly safe. Don't use DMZ & disable ICMP packets. You can also turn on SPI filtering. It handles everything else fairly well.
