I've been wondering about a remote start system for my car. Does the wiring in a remote sys bypass the need to push the clutch in for ignition? Or is a remote sys out of the question on a manual car? Just a question thats been bugging me...

They are usually out of the question because many people won't install it for liability issues. They can be bypassed because i did it in mine ;D Try looking for an installer that knows what he's doing. If he won't do it thru the company see if he's willing to do it on the side

Generally speaking this is highly recommended AGAINST. Of course, you are welcome to do as you wish at your own risk.

As Brandon said, places won't do it for liability. Bypassing the clutch-starter interlock isn't the best idea in the world. As Brandon said, it's possible. The issues are as follows:

1. You must leave your car in neutral anytime you plan on using the remote start. If there is the slightest hill, and your parking brake fails or you forget to use it....you may end up with your car somewhere other than where you parked it.

2. If you forget to leave the car in neutral and decide to use your remote start, you could end up with a very unhappy clutch/transmission.....and a rather amusing jackrabbit car in the parking lot for any spectators.

Just take these into consideration if you haven't already.....

I thought about doing it in mine, but I decided against it....it's not worth the risk for me.

if u buy an alarm/starter MADE for a manual tranny, like mine, compustar you shouldn't have any problems

Yeah, I'll probably wait until I have more money into my car then get an alarm/remotestart all together. BTW: whats your opinion of the pager style alarm. Basically the system where it doesn't blare an annoying siren that noone pays attention to, it just pages you and tells you what set it off. It seems like a great idea.

Nothing about manual cars though, but that is an impressive setup. Maybe one day...after new tires, rims, hood, CAI, susp drop, new shocks, new lines and rotors, new clutch.....well..you get the idea. maybe just new car.

Whoops, i wasnt very specific about what i was talking about. I looked at the site you gave and was pretty impressed with what they sell. Although I'm saying I'll probably wait until there is something in my car to really protect and then I'll get the whole alarm/remote start sys. Or I may wait on that and install one in a newer car (1995 civic) that I'm hoping to get here in the future.

So just how does the Compustar system work for the manual? Does it bypass the clutch-starter interlock and then just use a sensor system to determine if the car is in gear or not and just refuses to start if it is?

Or does it have solenoids to kick the transmission out of gear and apply the parking brake? Now that could be sweet.

the car stays starter when you remove the key so you can't leave it into gear. then when you close the doors the car arms. If you open the doors it won't start the next time. It only bypasses the clutch during remote starting, so when you normally start your car you must push the clutch in.

Kinda off the subj, but my dad reminded me of this guy he knew way back when that made his own remote start system - from scratch. Didnt have the fancy pager and what-not, but still...pretty cool.

Yeah, see I know my basic electronics: switches, wiring and most other 12v apps (I dont get AC at all) oscillation, relays, transformers, etc are beyond me right now. Oh well, I have a couple of books I NEED to read about this stuff.
