Pulled hard on a Golf TDI

Nice hilly and curvy 2 lane road. I was following the TDI and we had been speeding A LOT! He tried to leave me at the end of a curve going up a hill. He slowed to about 40 mph at the end of the curve and then hit it. Unluckly for him, 40 mph is prime for 2nd gear in my car. I ran through 2nd and made it well into 3rd. Reeled him in pretty quik going up the hill. Which really left me unimpressed with his car (or his driving). I looked on VW.com and they only have 90 HP, but the make 149 ft lb of torque (RPM?). Anybody else ever race one of these things?

I have a 1988 VW jetta GL 1.8 8v that walks all over TDI VW's. They are build for fuel economy not speed. They do have some great off the line ability, but once the revs get up they die.

Yeah the TDI is fuel economy car. They get like 50MPG or so.

Good off the line, but suck after that.

Actually the 1.8T's aren't all that fast. 180hp to the crank, and VW outsmarted themselves. They wanted a turbo car that felt like a naturally aspirated car. The drive by wire gives poor throttle response and major turbo lag. Of course a chipped 1.8T will smack you up...

Ill agree, a bone stock isnt super fast. But they are so easy to mod and make faster its not even funny.

Ive seen a new 1.8T with intake, downpipe and exhaust dyno at around 220 hp to the wheels.

It gained over 15 hp to the wheels just with an exhaust alone. Thats pretty impressive.

Those 1.8T's are nice. Why doesn't VW just let the ponies run free?

stock 1.8T owners =

1.8T's will own a modded honda in stock form too. Just thought I would let you know so you don't go out and get embarrassed or lose any money for that matter. I own both a 2000 Civic Si (i/h/e/cam gears/pulleys). It barely keeps up with my 2000 GTI 1.8T (when stock). Now that I have since started modding the GTI (chip, downpipe, inlet pipe/ diverter valve) it doesnt even come close. Just thought I would help ya get an idea of in stock form what you would need to keep up. There is a lot of torque in the Gti's.

So the Si (Canada's SiR) is slower than the GTI 1.8T Golf?

But doesn't that leave the civic with more room to spare since it's not turboed?

Yeah its slower. The GTI has a lot more Torque.

The only room you get to spare for the SI is the room under the hood. The GTI is so easy to mod its rediculous. We are talking over 350 hp on stock internals.

There is a guy on vwvortex.com running just over 400 hp on stock internals, but thats not usual.:o

My buddy just told me that a VW TDI running soy bean diesel just beat out WRX's in some rally.....aha here we are

"Q. What do a firefighter from Ohio, an engineer from Georgia and a little diesel engine from Germany all have in common?

A. They are all 2002 Champions in the SCCA Pro Rally .

In October of 2001, Jon Hamilton a firefighter from Marysville, Ohio had the crazy notion to run a VW Golf TDI in the SCCA Pro Rally production class. He wanted to do something a little different and wanted to do it in a VW."
