I am NOT saying that you can NOT use 87 octane at all. I am just saying what Honda recommends you to run. They based their R&D on a higher octane. The ECU controls the A/F ratio via that octane mixture.
When does pinging, knock, detonation occur? It occurs when timing (which directly affects combustion, which is a mixture of Air, Fuel, and Ignition) gets out of whack. So, yes pinging will eventually kill your motor.
