If you want on-road and off-road capabilities, get a stadium truck. For stadium trucks, I have a tricked out Nitro Rustler and an almost stock Losi xxx-t MF edition. The Losi would smoke it racing, but the Rustler stands up to more bashing abuse. I jump these both at full speed (35+ mph) and they survive pretty well.
If you want to mess around, a T-maxx would be fun to get. They just released a new version with a bigger motor, better suspension, etc. Not a bad deal and you can mod the hell out of them. For more Maxx info
