I know this may sound a bit stupid, but you can create a subtle black-housing effect by painting the plastic just underneath the headlight black. The bottom of the headlight is clear, so it just reflects anything underneath. If you paint the plastic that it sits on, then the whole light will appear darker without sacrificing beam pattern or intensity.
